Overview

Professional Security Glass Installation

Security glass is the first line of defense for protecting people, property, and assets. Unlike standard glass that shatters on impact, security glazing is engineered to resist penetration from physical attacks, projectiles, blast overpressure, and severe weather -- maintaining a protective barrier even when the glass itself is damaged.

Expert Glass Repair installs the full spectrum of security glazing products across the Washington DC metropolitan area. From basic laminated safety glass for residential ground-floor windows to UL 752 ballistic-rated glass for federal buildings and embassies, we match the right product to your specific security requirements and budget.

Every security glass installation begins with a free on-site assessment where we evaluate your existing glass and frames, discuss your security concerns, and recommend the appropriate protection level. We handle everything from product specification and frame reinforcement to professional installation and certification documentation.

Materials

Types of Security Glass

Different security glass materials offer different balances of protection level, weight, thickness, optical clarity, and cost. We select the right product for your specific requirements.

Most Popular

Laminated Safety Glass

Two or more glass plies bonded with a PVB (polyvinyl butyral) or SGP (SentryGlas Plus) interlayer.

Ballistic Grade

Glass-Clad Polycarbonate

Multiple layers of glass and polycarbonate bonded with polyurethane interlayers. The glass exterior provides scratch resistance and weather durability.

Impact Resistant

Polycarbonate Sheet

Solid polycarbonate (Lexan, Makrolon) is 250 times more impact-resistant than glass by weight.

Retrofit Option

Security Film Retrofit

Applied to the interior surface of existing glass, security window film in 8-mil to 15-mil thicknesses holds shattered glass together during impacts.

Applications

Where We Install Security Glass

Government & Federal Buildings

Security glazing for federal agencies, courthouses, embassies, and military facilities across the DC metro area. We install ballistic-rated, blast-resistant, and forced-entry glass meeting GSA, DoD, and State Department specifications. Our team has experience with classified facility requirements and security clearance protocols.

Banks & Financial Institutions

Bullet-resistant glass for teller windows, transaction counters, drive-through lanes, and lobby security stations. We install UL 752 Level 1-3 glazing with pass-through deal trays, speak-through communication devices, and package passers that maintain customer service while protecting employees.

Retail & Storefronts

Forced-entry resistant glass for jewelry stores, electronics retailers, pharmacies, convenience stores, and luxury boutiques. Laminated security glass deters smash-and-grab attacks while maintaining the visibility and appearance essential to retail environments. Security film provides an economical upgrade for existing storefront glass.

Schools & Universities

Safety and security glazing for school entrance vestibules, administrative offices, interior partitions, and classroom doors. Laminated glass meeting CPSC 16 CFR 1201 safety standards protects students from accidental breakage while forced-entry glass in entryways provides active-threat delay and containment.

Healthcare Facilities

Security glass for hospital emergency departments, psychiatric units, pharmacy windows, and reception areas. Healthcare environments require glazing that resists attack while meeting fire-rated, acoustic, and infection control requirements. We install detention-grade glass for behavioral health units and ballistic glass for emergency department triage.

Residential Properties

Laminated safety glass for ground-floor windows, sliding doors, basement windows, and home safe rooms. Security glass upgrades protect your family from break-ins, severe weather, and accidental impact. Modern laminated glass is visually identical to standard glass -- your home looks the same while being significantly more secure.

Advantages

Benefits of Security Glass

Security glass delivers protection that goes well beyond basic safety. Here is what certified security glazing provides for your property.

Physical Protection

Security glass creates a physical barrier against forced entry, projectiles, blast debris, and severe weather.

Deterrence

The presence of security glass deters opportunistic criminals. Smash-and-grab attacks become impractical when the glass refuses to break through.

Occupant Safety

Laminated and tempered safety glass protects building occupants from dangerous glass shards during impacts, storms, and blast events.

Insurance Benefits

Certified security glazing may reduce insurance premiums for both commercial and residential properties.

UV & Solar Protection

The PVB interlayer in laminated security glass blocks 99% of ultraviolet radiation, protecting interior furnishings, artwork, and merchandise from fading.

Sound Reduction

The laminated construction of security glass provides significant acoustic insulation.

Common Questions

Security Glass FAQ

What is the difference between tempered and laminated security glass?
Tempered glass is heat-treated to be 4-5 times stronger than standard glass and shatters into small, blunt granules on impact. Laminated glass consists of two or more glass layers bonded with a PVB or SGP interlayer that holds the glass together when broken, preventing penetration. For security applications, laminated glass is superior because the interlayer maintains the barrier even after the glass cracks. Many high-performance security products combine both -- using tempered glass plies with laminated interlayers for maximum strength.
Can security glass be retrofitted into existing window frames?
Standard laminated safety glass and security film can often be retrofitted into existing frames. However, heavier products like multi-ply forced-entry glass or ballistic-rated glass typically require frame reinforcement or complete frame replacement due to increased weight and thickness. During our free assessment, we evaluate your frames and recommend whether retrofit is feasible or if upgrades are needed.
What security glass rating do I need for my property?
The right rating depends on your threat profile. For basic residential safety, standard laminated glass with PVB interlayer is sufficient. For retail and commercial forced-entry deterrence, ASTM F1233 rated glass is recommended. For ballistic protection, UL 752 Level 1-3 covers handgun threats (banks, retail) while Levels 4-8 address rifle threats (government, military). We provide free on-site assessments to determine the right level for your needs.
Is security film a good alternative to replacing glass entirely?
Security film is an excellent cost-effective retrofit for existing glass. Applied to the interior surface, 8-mil to 15-mil film holds shattered glass in place, significantly delaying forced entry and containing blast debris. While film does not match the protection of purpose-built security glass, it practically upgrades large glass areas on a budget. Film also provides UV blocking and solar heat reduction as additional benefits.
How long does a security glass installation take?
A single window or door retrofit with laminated safety glass typically takes one day. Larger commercial projects with multiple openings may take several days to a few weeks depending on scope and whether structural modifications are required. Specialty security glass products have lead times of 2-6 weeks from order to delivery. We schedule installations to minimize disruption to your operations.
Does security glass look different from regular glass?
Modern security glass is designed for discreet protection. Laminated safety glass and forced-entry glass offer excellent optical clarity with no visible difference face-on. Ballistic glass is thicker at the edges and some products have a slight tint, but clarity is maintained. Security film is nearly invisible once applied. Your windows look normal while providing significantly enhanced protection.
What certifications should I look for in security glass?
Look for CPSC 16 CFR 1201 and ANSI Z97.1 for basic safety, ASTM F1233 for forced-entry resistance, UL 752 for ballistic protection, and ASTM F1642 or GSA TS01 for blast resistance. All products we install are independently tested and certified. We provide complete certification documentation with every installation.
Does security glass help reduce insurance premiums?
Many insurers offer premium discounts for properties with certified security glazing. Commercial properties with UL-listed security glass, forced-entry barriers, or ballistic glazing often qualify for meaningful savings on property and liability coverage. We provide all product certifications, UL listings, and installation records your insurer needs to apply available discounts.
