Common Questions

Basement Window FAQ

What is an egress window and do I need one in my basement?
An egress window is a window large enough for emergency escape and rescue access. Building codes in Virginia, Maryland, and DC require egress windows in finished basement bedrooms and habitable spaces. The opening must be at least 5.7 square feet with a minimum width of 20 inches and minimum height of 24 inches. The sill cannot be higher than 44 inches from the floor. If you are finishing your basement or adding a bedroom, an egress window is required by code.
How much does basement window replacement cost near me?
Basement window replacement costs depend on the window type (hopper, slider, awning, glass block), size, glass package, and whether you need an egress window which requires cutting into the foundation wall and installing a window well. Standard hopper window replacement is straightforward. Egress window installation is a larger project. We provide free estimates. Call (703) 679-7741.
Can you replace glass block basement windows?
Yes. We remove old glass block panels and install modern replacement options -- either new glass block with ventilation openings, or standard window frames (hopper, slider, or awning) with insulated double pane glass. Modern windows provide better insulation, easier ventilation, and an emergency exit option that glass block does not provide.
How do you prevent water from entering basement windows?
Proper basement window installation includes correct exterior grading, a window well with adequate drainage (gravel base and optional drain pipe), proper flashing and sealant between the window and foundation wall, and a window well cover if desired. We address all of these during installation to prevent water intrusion.
What type of basement window is best?
For standard basement applications, hopper windows (hinged at the bottom, opening inward) or awning windows (hinged at the top, opening outward) are most common. They provide ventilation and good sealing in below-grade applications. For egress requirements, casement or slider windows provide the necessary opening size. Vinyl frames are recommended because they resist moisture. Double pane with Low-E is standard for energy efficiency.
