Frosted Glass
Light In, Privacy On

Acid-etched and sandblasted frosted glass transforms clear panes into translucent surfaces that transmit 75-85% of light while blocking visibility. The classic solution for bathrooms, offices, and partitions across the DMV.

What Is Frosted Glass?

The Science of Light Diffusion for Privacy

Frosted glass is clear glass that has been surface-treated to scatter light instead of transmitting it directly. The treatment creates microscopic irregularities on the glass surface that redirect light rays in random directions. The result is a translucent panel that lets light through but makes it impossible to see clearly through the glass.

There are two primary methods for creating frosted glass. Acid-etching uses hydrofluoric acid to chemically dissolve the glass surface in a controlled manner, producing an extremely smooth, uniform satin finish. The acid reacts with the silica in the glass, creating a matte surface at the molecular level. Sandblasting propels fine abrasive particles (typically aluminum oxide) at the glass surface under high pressure, physically eroding the surface to create a textured matte finish.

The key difference between the two methods is texture and maintenance. Acid-etched glass has a smoother surface that resists fingerprints and cleans easily -- making it ideal for frequently touched surfaces like shower doors and door panels. Sandblasted glass has a rougher texture that can be customized with patterns and gradients by masking areas of the glass, but it shows fingerprints and requires more cleaning effort.

Both methods are permanent -- the frosted finish is in the glass itself, not a coating or film that can wear off. The glass retains its structural properties and can be tempered for safety applications.

Two Methods

How Frosted Glass Is Made

Two distinct processes create different frosted finishes, each with unique advantages.

Acid-Etching Process

Clear glass is cleaned and placed in a controlled environment. Hydrofluoric acid solution is applied to one or both surfaces, chemically dissolving the top layer of silica to create a smooth, uniform satin finish. The acid concentration and exposure time control the frost density. After etching, the glass is neutralized, rinsed, and dried. The result is a fingerprint-resistant surface with consistent opacity across the entire panel.

Sandblasting Process

Clear glass is placed in a blast cabinet. Fine abrasive particles (aluminum oxide or silicon carbide) are propelled at the glass surface under high pressure using compressed air. The particles physically erode the glass surface, creating a textured matte finish. For custom patterns, areas of the glass are masked with vinyl or rubber templates before blasting. The depth and density of the frost are controlled by air pressure, abrasive grit size, and blasting duration.

Benefits

Benefits of Frosted Glass

Natural Light + Privacy

Transmits 75-85% of visible light while completely obscuring the view. Eliminates the need for curtains or blinds in bathrooms, offices, and entryways.

Diffused, Glare-Free Light

Scatters incoming light in all directions, creating soft, even illumination without harsh glare or shadows. Ideal for workspaces, conference rooms, and any interior where light quality matters.

Elegant Aesthetic

The satin-smooth finish of acid-etched glass adds a refined, modern look to any space. Frosted glass partitions, doors, and panels are hallmarks of premium interior design.

Permanent Treatment

Unlike films or coatings that can peel, bubble, or discolor over time, acid-etched and sandblasted finishes are permanent alterations to the glass surface. They will last the life of the glass.

Custom Patterns Available

Sandblasting with masking allows custom patterns, logos, gradients, and designs. Partial frosting can create decorative bands, borders, or company branding on glass partitions and doors.

Safety Glass Compatible

Frosted glass can be tempered or laminated for code-compliant safety applications. Tempered frosted glass is required for shower doors, bathroom enclosures, and low windows.

Applications

Where We Install Frosted Glass in the DMV

Bathroom Windows

The most common frosted glass application. Bathroom windows in frosted tempered glass provide privacy without blocking natural light -- no blinds or curtains needed.

Shower Doors & Enclosures

Frosted tempered glass shower doors and panels provide privacy in shared bathrooms. Available in full-frost and partial-frost patterns with sleek hardware options.

Office Partitions

Glass-walled offices and conference rooms with frosted glass partitions maintain an open feel while providing visual privacy for meetings and focused work.

Front Door Sidelights

Frosted sidelights and transoms let light into entryways while preventing passersby from seeing inside. A common upgrade for DMV homes with glass panel front doors.

Interior Doors

Frosted glass panels in bedroom, bathroom, and closet doors allow light to flow between rooms while maintaining privacy. A sophisticated alternative to solid wood panels.

Cabinet & Furniture Glass

Frosted glass for kitchen cabinets, display cases, and built-in furniture hides clutter while maintaining the light, open feel of glass-front cabinetry.

FAQ

Frosted Glass -- Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between acid-etched and sandblasted frosted glass?

Acid-etched glass is created by applying hydrofluoric acid to the glass surface, producing a smooth, uniform, satin-like finish. It resists fingerprints and is easy to clean. Sandblasted glass is created by blasting the surface with fine abrasive particles, producing a coarser texture. Sandblasting allows for custom patterns and gradients, but the rougher surface shows fingerprints more easily. For most residential and commercial privacy applications, acid-etched glass is preferred for its clean look and low maintenance.

Does frosted glass provide complete privacy?

Standard frosted glass obscures shapes and details but does not provide complete privacy. At close range (within a few inches), silhouettes may be visible. The level of privacy depends on the frost density -- light frost provides partial obscurity while heavy frost provides near-complete privacy. For applications requiring complete visual privacy (like bathroom windows at ground level), we recommend heavy-frost acid-etched glass or combining frosted glass with a tinted interlayer.

Can frosted glass be tempered for safety?

Yes. Frosted glass can be tempered to meet safety glass requirements. For acid-etched glass, the etching is typically done before tempering. For sandblasted glass, the blasting is done after tempering. Both methods produce frosted glass that meets CPSC 16 CFR 1201 and ANSI Z97.1 safety standards. We always use tempered frosted glass in code-required locations: shower doors, bathroom enclosures, and any glazing within 18 inches of the floor.

How much light does frosted glass let through?

Frosted glass transmits approximately 75-85% of visible light, depending on the density of the frost. This is only slightly less than clear glass (83-87%). The key difference is that frosted glass diffuses the light, scattering it in all directions rather than transmitting it in a straight line. This creates a soft, even illumination without glare -- which is why frosted glass is popular for bathroom windows, office partitions, and light fixtures.

Can you add frosting to existing glass without replacing it?

Yes, there are two options. Frosted window film is a cost-effective solution that can be applied to existing glass. It provides a similar appearance to frosted glass and can be removed if needed. However, film does not match the quality and durability of true acid-etched or sandblasted glass. For permanent frosting, the glass must be removed, processed, and reinstalled -- or more practically, replaced with a new frosted glass panel. We offer both solutions.

Is frosted glass more expensive than clear glass?

Acid-etched frosted glass typically costs 20-40% more than equivalent clear glass. Sandblasted glass costs vary widely depending on the pattern complexity -- simple full-surface sandblasting is comparable to acid-etching, while custom patterns with masking can cost significantly more. Frosted window film is the most affordable option but has a shorter lifespan and different tactile quality. For most DMV residential applications, acid-etched glass provides the best balance of quality and value.
