Glass Facts Every Homeowner Should Know

Quick reference points from our glass professionals to help you make informed decisions.

Building codes require tempered glass

Any glass within 24 inches of a door, within 18 inches of the floor, in bathrooms, or in railings must be tempered safety glass per Virginia, Maryland, and DC building codes.

Low-E coating is invisible

You cannot see or feel a Low-E coating on glass. The microscopically thin metallic oxide layer is applied during manufacturing and does not change the appearance of the glass.

Argon gas does not leak quickly

Properly sealed insulated glass units lose argon gas at roughly 1% per year. After 20 years, the unit still retains about 80% of its insulating gas fill.

Glass blocks most UVB but not UVA

Standard glass blocks about 97% of UVB rays but only 37% of UVA rays. Laminated glass blocks 99% of both types -- protecting furnishings and flooring from fading.

Laminated glass stays in the frame

When laminated glass breaks, the PVB interlayer holds the fragments together like a web. This is why it is required for skylights, overhead glazing, and hurricane zones.

Frosted glass is permanent

Acid-etched and sandblasted frosted glass is a permanent surface treatment -- it cannot wash off or wear away. Frosted film, by contrast, is removable but less durable.
