Decorative Glass Patterns We Install

Each decorative glass pattern creates a different visual effect. We bring physical samples to every consultation so you can see and feel the texture before ordering.

Reeded Glass

Vertical ridges rolled into the glass surface during manufacturing. Creates a distinctive linear texture that distorts images while transmitting light. The most popular decorative glass pattern in current DMV interior design trends -- used extensively for cabinet fronts, room dividers, and shower enclosures.

Fluted Glass

Similar to reeded glass but with deeper, wider channels that create a more pronounced visual effect. The deeper profile provides slightly more privacy than standard reeded glass. Available in clear and tinted options. Popular for entry door sidelites and office partitions.

Rain Glass

Textured surface that mimics water droplets running down glass. One smooth side, one textured side. Provides good privacy while creating a natural, organic visual effect. Extremely popular for bathroom windows and shower enclosures in DMV homes.

Acid-Etched / Satin Glass

Chemically treated smooth glass with a translucent, silky finish. Provides uniform diffusion without the physical texture of sandblasted glass. Available in gradients (clear to fully frosted) for elegant transitions. Used extensively in high-end Georgetown and Bethesda residential projects.

FAQ

Decorative Glass -- Frequently Asked Questions

Is decorative glass as strong as regular glass?

Decorative textures are applied during manufacturing and do not weaken the glass. Reeded, fluted, rain, and other textured glass options are available in tempered (safety) versions for code-required applications like shower enclosures, doors, and low-mounted windows. We always specify tempered decorative glass where building code requires it.

Can decorative glass be used in insulated (double-pane) windows?

Yes. Textured and patterned glass can be incorporated into insulated glass units (IGUs). Typically, the decorative glass is placed on the interior pane with a clear Low-E glass on the exterior pane. This gives you the visual effect inside while maintaining full thermal performance and weather resistance on the exterior.

How do I choose between reeded, fluted, and rain glass?

Reeded glass has subtle vertical ridges and is the most currently popular for modern interior design. Fluted has deeper, wider channels for a bolder look. Rain glass has an organic droplet texture for a softer, natural feel. We have samples of all patterns that we bring to your consultation so you can see and feel each texture in person.

Can you match decorative glass in historic DC homes?

Yes. We work with specialty glass fabricators who can reproduce historic glass patterns, textured glass, and even leaded glass designs to match existing historic windows. This is important for Georgetown, Capitol Hill, and other DC neighborhoods where historic preservation requirements mandate visual consistency with original glazing.

How much does decorative glass cost compared to clear glass?

Decorative glass typically costs more than standard clear glass, with the premium varying by pattern complexity: textured glass (reeded, fluted, rain) is the most affordable decorative upgrade, acid-etched glass costs moderately more, and custom art glass or sandblasted designs are premium options. Every project is custom-quoted. Call (703) 679-7741 for your free estimate.
