Engineering Detail
Smart glass technologies use different physical mechanisms to control light transmission, but all share the common principle of changing optical properties in response to an electrical signal.
Electrochromic glass uses a thin multi-layer coating on the glass surface consisting of an ion storage layer, ion conductor, and electrochromic layer (typically tungsten oxide). When voltage is applied, lithium ions migrate between layers, causing the tungsten oxide to absorb visible and infrared light. Reversing the voltage clears the glass.
Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal glass contains microscopic liquid crystal droplets suspended in a polymer film between two glass sheets with transparent conductive coatings. With no voltage, the crystals are randomly oriented and scatter light (opaque white). When voltage is applied, crystals align and light passes through (clear). The switch is nearly instantaneous.
Suspended Particle Device glass uses rod-shaped nanoparticles suspended in a fluid between glass layers. With no voltage, the particles are randomly oriented and absorb light (dark). When voltage is applied, particles align and allow light through (clear). SPD provides fast, variable tinting with precise light control.
Smart glass requires very low power. Electrochromic glass uses only 1-5 watts per square meter during transitions and zero watts to maintain a tinted state. PDLC requires about 5-7 watts per square meter to maintain the clear state (it defaults to opaque when power is off, providing privacy during power failures).
Commercial smart glass connects to building management systems via BACnet, Modbus, KNX, or simple dry-contact relays. Systems can be automated based on sun position, exterior brightness, occupancy, time schedules, or room booking systems. Most support smartphone and voice control integration.
Smart glass has no moving parts and requires no more maintenance than standard glazing. Electrochromic coatings are integral to the glass and protected within the IGU. PDLC and SPD films are laminated between glass layers. The electrical connections are the only additional maintenance item.
Applications
PDLC glass partitions provide instant privacy for meetings at the touch of a button. Clear glass maintains the open office feel between meetings. Integrates with room booking systems for automatic privacy when meetings start.
Glass-walled executive offices with switchable privacy. Maintain visibility and approachability when clear, instant privacy for confidential discussions. Electrochromic exterior glass controls glare on screens.
PDLC privacy glass for patient rooms, ICU partitions, nursery windows, and operating room observation panels. Instant privacy for procedures and consultations while maintaining visibility for monitoring when needed.
Electrochromic glass in commercial tower facades eliminates the need for blinds and automated shading. Reduces cooling costs by 20-25 percent while maintaining views and daylight. Major DC buildings now specifying View and SageGlass.
Switchable glass storefronts that transition from transparent display windows to opaque for after-hours privacy or projection screens. Smart glass creates dynamic, attention-grabbing retail experiences.
Smart glass bathroom partitions, spa privacy panels, and guest room windows with automated tinting based on sun position. Premium amenity that elevates the guest experience in luxury hotels.

Common Questions
Smart glass changes its light transmission when voltage is applied. The main commercial types are electrochromic (gradual clear-to-dark tinting), PDLC (instant transparent-to-opaque switching), and SPD (rapid tint adjustment). All are electrically controlled and can be automated or manually switched.
Electrochromic gradually tints from clear to dark, controlling solar heat and glare while maintaining see-through visibility. PDLC switches instantly between transparent and frosted white for complete visual privacy. Electrochromic is for exterior windows; PDLC is for interior privacy partitions.
Electrochromic glass reduces cooling costs by 20-25 percent. In its darkest state, it blocks up to 98 percent of solar energy. DOE studies show 10-20 percent total HVAC savings compared to low-E glass with blinds.
PDLC and SPD films can be applied to existing glass as retrofit. Electrochromic typically requires full panel replacement. PDLC film retrofit is the most popular option for adding switchable privacy to existing buildings.
Electrochromic glass lasts 30+ years with 50,000+ tinting cycles. PDLC film lasts 10-15 years. SPD film lasts 10-20 years. All require low-voltage electrical connections but have no moving parts and minimal maintenance.
Yes. All commercial systems integrate with BMS via BACnet, Modbus, and KNX. Automation based on sun position, occupancy, daylight levels, and schedules. Smartphone and tablet control apps available.
About Smart Glass
Smart glass is transforming commercial architecture in the Washington DC metro area. From the electrochromic curtain walls of new Tysons Corner office towers to PDLC privacy partitions in K Street law firms, switchable glass technology is replacing traditional blinds, curtains, and fixed window films with dynamic, electronically controlled solutions. The technology delivers measurable benefits: 20-25 percent cooling energy savings, elimination of blind maintenance, improved daylight harvesting, and instant privacy on demand.
Choosing the right smart glass technology depends on your primary goal. For exterior windows where solar heat gain and glare are the concerns, electrochromic glass (View, SageGlass, Halio) provides gradual, variable tinting that blocks up to 98 percent of solar energy while maintaining outward visibility. For interior partitions where instant privacy is needed, PDLC glass switches between clear and frosted white in under one second. For applications requiring both fast response and variable tinting, SPD technology offers the best of both worlds.
