Crack Diagnosis

Types of Glass Cracks

Understanding the type of crack is essential for proper repair. Each crack type has different causes, behaviors, and repair requirements.

Stress Cracks

Stress cracks start at the glass edge and extend inward in a straight or gently curving line. They have no visible impact point.

Starts at glass edge
No impact point visible
Straight or gently curved line
Often appears gradually

Impact Cracks

Impact cracks radiate outward from a visible point of contact in a starburst or spider web pattern.

Visible impact point
Radiating crack lines
Starburst or spider web pattern
May have chipped glass at impact

Thermal Cracks

Thermal cracks are a specific type of stress crack caused by temperature differentials across the glass surface.

Perpendicular to glass edge
Occurs on sun-exposed windows
No impact evidence
Appears during hot or cold weather

Edge Cracks

Edge cracks originate from damage at the glass perimeter where the glass meets the frame.

Originates at frame edge
May be hidden by frame overlap
Often caused by installation issues
Can propagate from edge chips

Pressure Cracks

Pressure cracks occur in insulated glass units when the sealed airspace expands or contracts beyond the glass capacity.

Curved crack pattern
Occurs in sealed IGUs
No impact point
Related to pressure changes

Spontaneous Breakage

Tempered glass can fracture spontaneously due to nickel sulfide inclusions -- microscopic impurities trapped during manufacturing.

Tempered glass only
Shatters into small cubes
No external impact
Caused by internal impurity

Decision Guide

Repair vs. Replacement

Not every crack requires full glass replacement. Here is how we determine the right approach for your situation.

Small chip (smaller than a quarter)

Repair may be possible

Small chips in annealed glass can sometimes be filled with clear resin to prevent crack propagation and improve appearance. The repair is cosmetic -- the chip remains visible upon close inspection. This buys time if immediate replacement is not feasible.

Crack shorter than 6 inches

Repair with monitoring

Short cracks in annealed glass can be stabilized with resin injection in some cases. However, the crack may grow, especially during temperature changes. This is a temporary measure best suited for situations where replacement must be delayed for scheduling or budget reasons.

Crack longer than 6 inches

Replace the glass

Long cracks significantly weaken the glass and are likely to continue growing. The pane should be replaced promptly. Temporary taping on both sides can slow propagation until replacement glass is available.

Crack in tempered glass

Replace immediately

Tempered glass that has cracked has lost its structural integrity entirely and will eventually shatter into small pieces. Replacement is the only option. The entire panel must be replaced with new tempered glass fabricated to the same specifications.

Crack in double-pane IGU

Replace the IGU

Any crack in an insulated glass unit means the hermetic seal is broken. Even if the crack is small, the unit has lost its insulating gas fill and will develop condensation between the panes. The entire IGU must be replaced.

Multiple cracks or spider web pattern

Replace urgently

Multiple cracks or a radiating spider web pattern indicate severe structural compromise. The glass can fail suddenly from wind, vibration, or temperature change. Board up if necessary and replace the glass as soon as materials are available.

Safety Concerns

Why Cracked Glass Is Dangerous

Sudden Failure

Cracked glass can shatter without warning from wind gusts, door slams, vibrations, or temperature changes. The longer a crack exists, the weaker the glass becomes. What seems stable today can fail catastrophically tomorrow, especially during DMV weather extremes.

Sharp Glass Hazard

When cracked annealed glass breaks, it produces large, razor-sharp shards that can cause deep lacerations. Children, pets, and anyone near the window when it fails is at risk. Tempered glass cracks into small cubes that are less dangerous but still require immediate cleanup.

Security Vulnerability

A cracked window is significantly easier to break through than intact glass. Burglars can punch through a cracked pane with minimal noise. The crack announces to anyone passing by that the glass is compromised and the home may be an easier target.

Water Infiltration

Cracks that extend through the full thickness of the glass allow rainwater, snow melt, and condensation to enter the wall cavity. Water damage to insulation, framing, and drywall can develop hidden behind the window frame before it becomes visible.

Energy Loss

A cracked window loses thermal performance immediately. In insulated glass units, even a hairline crack breaks the hermetic seal, allowing the insulating gas to escape. Your HVAC system works harder to compensate, increasing energy costs every day the crack remains.

Pest Entry

Cracks wide enough to feel air movement allow insects, spiders, and in some cases small rodents to enter your home. Even narrow cracks that seem sealed can widen with temperature changes, creating gaps large enough for pest entry, especially during DMV summer bug season.

Common Questions

Cracked Glass Repair FAQ

Can a cracked window be repaired without replacing the glass?
Small cracks in annealed glass can sometimes be stabilized with resin injection, similar to windshield crack repair. However, this is a temporary cosmetic improvement -- the crack remains and the glass integrity is still compromised. For most residential and commercial applications, glass replacement is the proper and permanent repair. Cracked tempered glass and laminated glass always require full replacement.
Why did my window crack on its own?
Spontaneous cracks are almost always thermal stress cracks. They occur when one area of the glass is significantly hotter or cooler than an adjacent area. Direct sunlight on partially shaded glass, heating vents aimed at windows, and dark curtains against cold glass are common triggers. Edge damage from installation, frame shifting, and building settlement can also initiate delayed cracking.
Is a cracked window dangerous?
Yes. Cracked glass is weaker than intact glass and can shatter unexpectedly from wind pressure, vibration, or temperature changes. Annealed glass cracks into sharp shards that cause serious cuts. Additionally, a cracked window is easier to break through, creating a security vulnerability. Children and pets near cracked glass are at particular risk.
How fast can a crack spread?
Crack propagation depends on the crack type and environmental conditions. Stress cracks can grow slowly over weeks or rapidly during temperature swings. Impact cracks may remain stable or extend suddenly if the glass experiences vibration or pressure changes. In the DMV, the freeze-thaw cycles of winter can accelerate crack growth significantly. We recommend addressing cracks promptly rather than waiting.
Will a cracked window cause higher energy bills?
A crack in a single-pane window allows direct air infiltration. In a double-pane insulated glass unit, a crack in one pane compromises the sealed airspace and eliminates the insulating benefit of the gas fill. Both scenarios increase heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer, raising your HVAC costs. The energy penalty increases as the crack grows.
Does homeowners insurance cover cracked windows?
Homeowners insurance typically covers window cracks caused by specific events like storms, vandalism, falling objects, and accidental impact. Thermal stress cracks and cracks from building settlement are generally not covered because they are considered maintenance issues. Check your policy or call your agent. We provide the documentation and invoicing needed for covered claims.
What is the difference between a stress crack and an impact crack?
Stress cracks start at the edge of the glass and run in a relatively straight or gently curved line across the pane. There is no visible point of impact. Impact cracks radiate outward from a visible point of contact, often in a starburst or spider web pattern. The distinction matters because stress cracks indicate an ongoing environmental issue that may crack the replacement glass too unless the cause is addressed.
Can you replace just the cracked pane in a double-pane window?
No. Double-pane windows use a sealed insulated glass unit (IGU) where both panes are bonded to a spacer with a hermetic seal. If one pane is cracked, the entire IGU must be replaced because the seal is broken and the unit cannot be reassembled in the field. However, the existing window frame and sash are reused, so IGU replacement is faster and more affordable than full window replacement.
How long does cracked glass replacement take?
For standard single-pane windows, replacement can often be completed same-day if we have the glass size in stock. Custom-cut glass and insulated glass units typically require 3 to 7 business days for fabrication followed by a 30 to 90 minute installation appointment. We measure precisely to ensure the replacement glass fits correctly the first time.
Should I tape a cracked window?
Applying clear packing tape over a crack can help prevent the crack from spreading temporarily and holds the glass together if it does break further. Place tape on both sides of the glass over the crack. This is a short-term measure only -- tape does not restore structural integrity or weather sealing. Schedule replacement as soon as possible.
What types of glass can you replace?
We replace all types including annealed, tempered, laminated, Low-E coated, tinted, obscure, patterned, wired, insulated glass units, and specialty architectural glass. We match the existing glass specifications including thickness, coating, tint, and performance ratings so the replacement matches your other windows.
Do you offer emergency service for cracked glass?
Yes. If a crack is severe and the glass could break out at any time, we treat it as an emergency. We can board up a severely cracked window the same day and schedule replacement as quickly as materials allow. Call (703) 679-7741 and describe the situation -- we will advise on urgency and dispatch accordingly.
