The Expert Glass Advantage

Why Childcare Facilities Choose Expert Glass

Daycares and preschools across the DMV trust us because child safety is our absolute priority -- every specification, every material, every installation method.

Child Safety Expertise

We understand that children interact with glass differently than adults -- they run, throw toys, press their faces against windows, and test boundaries.

Licensing Compliance

DC, Virginia, and Maryland childcare licensing agencies have specific requirements for glass in childcare facilities.

Parent Confidence

Parent viewing windows and transparent design build trust with families. When parents can observe their children learning and playing, they feel confident in your facility. Glass is a visible commitment to transparency and openness.

Child-Free Installation

Every glass installation happens when children are not present. No construction noise during nap time. No glass dust near play areas. No safety hazards during operating hours. Your facility is spotless and safe when the first child arrives.

Our Process

Safety-First Installation Process

Every step prioritizes child safety -- from assessment through installation to inspection-ready handoff.

01
1

Safety Assessment

We evaluate every glass surface in your facility against current building codes and licensing requirements. We identify non-compliant glass, safety risks, and opportunities for parent viewing windows and security upgrades.

02
2

Code-Compliant Specification

We provide proposals specifying safety glass types, impact ratings, and compliance documentation for each location. Every specification meets IBC, CPSC, and local childcare licensing requirements.

03
3

Child-Free Installation

All work happens when children are not present. We protect all surfaces, remove debris completely, and verify that every edge, corner, and mounting point is safe for a childcare environment.

04
4

Inspection-Ready Handoff

We provide compliance documentation, safety glass certifications, and inspection-ready paperwork. Every installation is verified for proper safety glazing labels, secure mounting, and code compliance.

In-Depth

Why Safety Glass Matters in Childcare Facilities

Children interact with their environment in ways that adults do not. They run with abandon, throw toys with surprising force, press their hands and faces against glass surfaces, and test physical boundaries as part of their natural development. Standard glass was never designed for this level of interaction. Safety glass -- tempered and laminated -- is specifically engineered to protect children when the unexpected happens.

Tempered glass is heat-treated to be 4-5 times stronger than standard glass of the same thickness. When tempered glass does break, it crumbles into small, relatively harmless granular pieces rather than breaking into large, sharp shards that can cause serious lacerations. Laminated safety glass goes further by sandwiching a plastic interlayer between two glass panels. When laminated glass is broken, the interlayer holds the glass in place, preventing any fragments from falling and eliminating the risk entirely. For the highest-risk areas in childcare facilities -- glass near play equipment, at child height, and in high-traffic zones -- we recommend laminated safety glass.

Beyond impact safety, glass in childcare facilities must meet licensing requirements specific to each jurisdiction. We work with the DC OSSE, Virginia DSS, and Maryland OCC licensing standards to ensure every installation passes inspection. Parent viewing windows are one of the most valuable glass upgrades for any childcare facility -- they build trust with families and differentiate your program from competitors. When parents can see their children learning and thriving, enrollment conversations become easier and parent satisfaction increases.

Childcare FAQ

Daycare & Preschool Glass Questions

Answers for daycare owners, preschool directors, and childcare facility managers across the DMV.

What type of glass is required in childcare facilities?
Childcare facilities must use safety glazing (tempered or laminated glass) in all areas accessible to children. Building codes (IBC Section 2406 and local jurisdictions) mandate safety glazing in doors, sidelights, glass within 18 inches of the floor, glass near walking surfaces, and any glass within 36 inches of a door. In childcare facilities, best practice is to use safety glazing everywhere children can reach, regardless of height, because children interact with glass differently than adults.
Can you install parent observation windows in our classrooms?
Yes. We install viewing windows that let parents observe their children in classrooms, play areas, and nap rooms without disrupting activities. Options include clear observation windows at adult height, child-height viewing panels, one-way mirror glass that lets parents see in but children see a mirror, and interior windows between classrooms and hallways for staff supervision. All observation windows use safety glazing.
Do your installations pass childcare licensing inspections?
Yes. We understand the glass requirements of the DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), Virginia Department of Social Services, and Maryland Office of Child Care licensing agencies. Every installation uses code-compliant safety glazing, proper mounting, and materials that meet licensing standards. We provide documentation including safety glass certifications and compliance records for your inspection files.
How does safety glass protect children if it breaks?
Tempered safety glass is 4-5 times stronger than standard glass. When it does break, it shatters into small, rounded granular pieces rather than sharp shards, dramatically reducing injury risk. Laminated safety glass goes further -- it holds together when broken because a plastic interlayer keeps the glass in place, preventing any pieces from falling. For the highest-risk areas in childcare facilities (near play equipment, at child height), we recommend laminated glass.
Do you work when children are not present?
Always. All glass work in childcare facilities is performed exclusively when children are not in the building -- evenings, weekends, school breaks, and holidays. There is no construction noise during nap time or quiet activities, no glass dust or debris near play areas or food service, and no tools or materials accessible to children at any time. We clean to childcare standards after every installation session.
Can you upgrade our existing windows to safety glass?
Yes. Many older childcare facilities have standard glass that does not meet current safety glazing requirements. We can replace existing windows with safety-rated tempered or laminated glass without changing your window frames in most cases. This upgrade brings your facility into compliance with current building codes and licensing requirements and significantly reduces the risk of glass-related injuries.
