Climate Control

Year-Round Comfort Engineering

The DMV experiences hot, humid summers and cold winters. A well-designed glass enclosure manages temperature, humidity, ventilation, and solar gain to keep you comfortable every month of the year.

Insulated Glass Units (IGUs)

Double-pane and triple-pane insulated glass units are the foundation of a climate-controlled enclosure.

Low-E Glass Coatings

Low-emissivity coatings are microscopically thin metallic layers applied to the glass surface. They reflect infrared heat back toward its source -- keeping heat inside during winter and outside during summer. Low-E glass reduces energy loss by up to 50% compared to uncoated glass, making it essential for heated or cooled enclosures.

Ventilation & Airflow

Proper ventilation prevents condensation, controls humidity, and provides fresh air. We integrate operable windows, louver vents, and motorized ventilation panels into every enclosure design. For pool enclosures, ventilation is critical to manage chlorine-laden air and prevent moisture damage to surrounding structures.

Heating Integration

Four-season enclosures require supplemental heating for DMV winters. Ductless mini-split heat pumps are the most popular option -- they provide both heating and cooling without ductwork. We also integrate radiant floor heating, baseboard heaters, and connections to existing HVAC systems depending on the project scope.

Solar Heat Management

Glass enclosures gain significant solar heat, which is desirable in winter but can cause overheating in summer. We manage solar gain through glass selection (tinted, reflective, or electrochromic), exterior shading systems, roof overhangs, and operable roof panels that vent hot air. The right combination keeps the space comfortable year-round.

Condensation Prevention

Temperature differentials between inside and outside glass surfaces cause condensation, especially in pool enclosures and humid environments. We prevent condensation through thermally broken frames, proper IGU spacer bars, adequate ventilation, and dehumidification systems. Warm-edge spacer technology in our IGUs reduces edge condensation by up to 70%.

Design Options

Framing, Glass & Opening Systems

Every glass enclosure is configured from three core decisions: the framing system, the glass type, and how the panels open. We help you select the right combination for your project goals, budget, and architectural style.

Framing Systems

Aluminum Frames

The most common framing material for glass enclosures. Aluminum is strong, lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and available in any powder-coat color. Standard and thermally broken profiles available.

Steel Frames

For large spans and architectural statement projects. Steel provides the thinnest possible sightlines while supporting heavy glass panels. Hot-dip galvanized and powder-coated for corrosion resistance.

Frameless Systems

Glass-to-glass connections using structural silicone, point-fixed fittings, or channel systems. Frameless enclosures maximize transparency and create a seamless indoor-outdoor connection.

Vinyl (PVC) Frames

Budget-friendly framing with excellent thermal performance. Vinyl frames never need painting and resist rot and corrosion. Best suited for residential patio and porch enclosures.

Glass Types

Tempered Safety Glass

Heat-treated glass that is 4-5 times stronger than standard glass and breaks into small, relatively harmless pieces. Required by code for enclosure applications.

Laminated Glass

Two glass lites bonded with a PVB or SGP interlayer. Laminated glass stays intact when broken, provides superior sound insulation, and blocks 99% of UV radiation.

Tinted Glass

Bronze, gray, green, or blue tinted glass reduces solar heat gain and glare while maintaining outward visibility. Tinted glass is ideal for sun-exposed enclosures.

Self-Cleaning Glass

Glass with a photocatalytic coating that breaks down organic dirt using UV light, then rinses clean with rainwater. Reduces glass cleaning frequency by up to 80%.

Opening Mechanisms

Sliding Panels

Glass panels that slide horizontally on tracks. Available in 2-panel, 3-panel, and multi-panel configurations. Stacking and pocket options allow panels to fully clear the opening.

Bi-Fold (Folding) Panels

Glass panels that fold and stack to one or both sides of the opening. Bi-fold systems can open 90-100% of the wall, creating a true indoor-outdoor experience when weather permits.

Pivot Doors

Single glass panels that rotate on a central or offset pivot point. Pivot doors make a design statement and are available in sizes up to 10 feet tall and 5 feet wide.

Motorized Retractable Walls

Fully automated glass wall systems that open and close at the touch of a button. Motorized systems include weather sensors that automatically close the panels during rain or high winds.

Benefits

Why Glass Enclosures?

Year-Round Use

The DMV has four distinct seasons. A glass enclosure lets you enjoy your outdoor space every month -- sheltered from winter cold, spring pollen, summer storms, and fall leaves.

Added Living Space

A glass-enclosed patio functions as an additional room for dining, relaxing, working, or entertaining. It is the most cost-effective way to add usable square footage.

Home Value

Glass enclosures increase usable living area and improve curb appeal. They are a sought-after feature in the competitive DMV housing market.

Natural Light

Glass walls and roof panels flood the space with natural sunlight without the drawbacks of being fully outdoors. UV-protective glass options prevent furniture fading.

Reduced Maintenance

Enclosed patios and pools require significantly less cleaning. No leaves, debris, or bird droppings to deal with. Pool enclosures reduce chemical usage and cleaning frequency.

Insect Protection

Enjoy the outdoors without mosquitoes, gnats, or wasps. Sealed glass enclosures provide complete insect protection while maintaining visibility and airflow through operable vents.

Common Questions

Glass Enclosure FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about glass enclosure projects in the Washington DC metropolitan area.

What is the difference between a sunroom and a glass enclosure?
A sunroom is a fully insulated room addition with a foundation, insulated walls, and typically a solid roof. A glass enclosure converts an existing patio or porch into a protected space using glass panels within the existing structure. Glass enclosures are less expensive and faster to install.
Can you convert a screened porch to glass?
Yes. Screen-to-glass conversion is one of our most popular services. We replace the screen panels with glass while preserving your existing porch frame and structure. This extends the usable season from warm months to year-round.
Do glass enclosures require building permits?
In most DMV jurisdictions, glass enclosures that modify the building envelope require a building permit. We handle the permit process including submitting plans, scheduling inspections, and ensuring code compliance in Arlington, Fairfax, Alexandria, Montgomery County, and DC.
Are glass enclosures energy efficient?
Modern glass enclosures with Low-E insulated glass provide good thermal performance. We recommend Low-E coated insulated glass for year-round comfort. For heated/cooled spaces, we install thermally broken frames and high-performance IGUs with U-values as low as 0.25.
How long does glass enclosure installation take?
A simple screen-to-glass conversion typically takes 1-3 days. A full custom glass enclosure for a patio or pool area takes 3-5 days of on-site work after the fabrication period of 2-4 weeks.
Can glass enclosures be heated and cooled?
Yes. Four-season enclosures can be fully climate-controlled. We install thermally broken aluminum or vinyl frames with high-performance IGUs to maintain the thermal envelope. Ductless mini-split heat pumps are the most popular HVAC option for glass enclosures -- they provide both heating and cooling without ductwork.
What glass options work best for pool enclosures?
Pool enclosures require tempered safety glass (code requirement), and we strongly recommend laminated glass for the added safety of staying intact if broken. Tinted glass reduces glare off the water. Ventilation panels are essential to manage humidity and chlorine fumes. Self-cleaning glass coatings are popular for pool enclosures to reduce maintenance.
Do you install commercial glass enclosures?
Yes. We design and install commercial glass enclosures including restaurant outdoor dining enclosures, hotel atria, office building lobbies, and retail storefronts. Commercial projects include structural engineering, fire code compliance, ADA accessibility, and coordination with general contractors.
What framing materials are available?
We offer aluminum (most popular, available thermally broken), steel (thinnest sightlines, strongest), vinyl/PVC (budget-friendly, excellent thermal performance), and frameless systems (structural silicone or point-fixed fittings for maximum transparency). The right choice depends on your budget, thermal requirements, and aesthetic preferences.
How do you handle condensation in glass enclosures?
Condensation is managed through a combination of thermally broken frames (which prevent cold bridging), warm-edge IGU spacers, adequate ventilation, and dehumidification where needed. Pool enclosures and high-humidity environments require special attention to ventilation design to prevent moisture damage.
