Railing Systems

Glass Handrail Systems We Install

From minimalist frameless designs to robust commercial systems, we install glass handrails engineered for safety and built for your aesthetic vision.

Standoff Glass Railings

Individual point fixings mount glass panels to posts or structural elements. The glass appears to float with minimal visible hardware.

Channel (Base Shoe) Systems

Aluminum or stainless steel U-channels anchor along the floor edge and clamp the glass panels at their base.

Post-and-Glass Systems

Vertical posts at regular intervals support glass infill panels. The posts provide structural support while the glass panels create the guard barrier.

Staircase Railings

Glass panels follow the stair pitch with precision-cut angled edges. Staircase railings require careful measurement of rise and run to ensure each panel.

Balcony and Deck Railings

Exterior glass railings for balconies, decks, and terraces that preserve views while meeting safety codes.

Commercial and ADA Compliant

Glass railing systems for commercial buildings, offices, retail spaces, and public areas.

Glass and Hardware Options

Glass Options

Safety-rated for railing use

All glass handrail panels use tempered or laminated safety glass as required by building codes. We offer clear, low-iron (Starphire), frosted, tinted, and patterned options. Glass thickness ranges from 3/8-inch to 5/8-inch depending on panel size, mounting method, and wind load requirements. Every panel is custom-fabricated with polished edges and precision-drilled holes for your specific installation.

  • Clear tempered glass for maximum transparency
  • Low-iron glass for crystal-clear views
  • Frosted and acid-etched for privacy
  • Tinted glass in bronze, gray, and blue
  • Laminated tempered for maximum safety

Hardware and Finishes

Stainless steel, aluminum, custom

We use commercial-grade hardware from leading manufacturers. Stainless steel in 304 and 316 grades for interior and exterior applications respectively. Aluminum channels and posts with anodized or powder-coated finishes. Top rails available in stainless steel, brushed aluminum, wood cap rails, and painted steel. All hardware is load-rated and tested for guardrail applications.

  • Brushed and polished stainless steel
  • 316 marine-grade for exterior use
  • Matte black powder-coated options
  • Wood cap rails in oak, walnut, maple
  • Custom finishes to match your design

Safety and Code

Code Compliance and Safety Standards

Every glass handrail we install meets or exceeds building code requirements for your specific jurisdiction and application.

Height Requirements

Residential guardrails: 36 inches minimum. Commercial guardrails: 42 inches minimum. Stair handrails: 34 to 38 inches measured vertically from the stair nosing. We verify requirements for your specific jurisdiction and application.

Load Ratings

200-pound concentrated load at any point along the top rail. 50-pound-per-linear-foot distributed load along the top. Our engineered systems are tested and certified to meet these load requirements with appropriate safety factors.

Glass Safety Standards

All glass meets ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16 CFR 1201 safety glazing standards. Tempered glass breaks into small, blunt pieces. Laminated glass holds together when broken. We use safety glass exclusively in all railing applications.

Opening Limitations

No opening in the railing system can allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through. This protects children from getting stuck or falling through gaps. Our panel sizing and hardware spacing are designed to meet this requirement throughout the system.

Structural Anchoring

Hardware is anchored to structural members with connections engineered for the required guard loads. We perform pull-out testing on anchors when required. Concrete, steel, and wood substrates each require specific anchor types and installation methods.

Permit Assistance

We prepare engineering documents, shop drawings, and product certifications needed for permit applications. Our systems have been approved in Fairfax County, Arlington, Montgomery County, DC, and throughout the DMV. We handle the permit process for you.

Common Questions

Glass Handrail FAQ

What type of glass is required for handrails and guardrails?
Building codes require tempered safety glass or laminated safety glass for all railing and guardrail applications. Tempered glass is four to five times stronger than annealed glass and breaks into small, relatively harmless pieces. Laminated glass holds together when broken because the interlayer keeps the fragments in place. For exterior and high-traffic applications, we often recommend laminated tempered glass for maximum safety -- it is both strong and retains its structure if broken.
What is the difference between standoff and channel mounting systems?
Standoff systems use individual metal fittings (called standoffs or point fixings) that bolt through holes drilled in the glass panel, mounting the panel to posts or the structure. They create a floating, minimalist look with visible hardware. Channel systems (also called base shoe or U-channel) clamp the bottom edge of the glass panel in an aluminum or stainless steel channel that is anchored to the floor or fascia. Channel systems hide the mounting hardware for a cleaner appearance.
Do glass handrails meet building codes in the DMV?
Yes, when properly designed and installed. The International Building Code and local DMV jurisdictions require guardrails to be at least 42 inches high for commercial applications and 36 inches for residential. Glass panels must withstand a 200-pound concentrated load and a 50-pound-per-linear-foot distributed load. The glass must be tempered or laminated safety glass. Openings in the railing system must not allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through. We design every installation to meet or exceed these code requirements.
Can glass handrails be installed outdoors?
Yes. We install exterior glass handrails for decks, balconies, rooftop terraces, pool surrounds, and outdoor staircases. Exterior installations use stainless steel hardware rated for weather exposure, typically 316 marine-grade stainless for maximum corrosion resistance. The glass panels handle weather, temperature changes, and UV exposure without degradation. Wind load calculations are performed for exterior installations to ensure the system withstands local wind requirements.
Do I need a top rail on a glass handrail?
It depends on the code requirements and your design preference. Many residential glass railings use a top cap rail in stainless steel, aluminum, or wood for a graspable handrail. Some jurisdictions require a graspable handrail on stairs regardless of the guard panel material. Frameless glass railings without a top rail are permitted as guards in many applications, but a separate wall-mounted handrail may be required on stairs. We review code requirements for your specific location and application.
How thick does glass need to be for handrails?
Glass thickness depends on the panel size, mounting method, and wind load requirements. Residential interior railings typically use 3/8-inch (10mm) or 1/2-inch (12mm) tempered glass. Exterior railings and taller panels often require 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch (15mm) tempered or laminated glass. Standoff-mounted panels may need thicker glass than channel-mounted panels because the point fixings create concentrated stress. We engineer the glass thickness for each installation based on span, height, and load requirements.
Can glass handrails be frosted or tinted for privacy?
Yes. We offer acid-etched frosted glass, sandblasted glass, tinted glass, and ceramic frit patterns for privacy and decorative effects. Frosted glass is popular for staircase railings where you want to block the view through the panels while maintaining the open feel that glass provides. All privacy treatments are applied to tempered or laminated safety glass that meets code requirements for railing use.
How do you maintain glass handrails?
Glass handrails require minimal maintenance. Clean the glass panels with standard glass cleaner and a soft cloth or squeegee. For exterior installations, rinse with water periodically to remove dirt and mineral deposits. Inspect the hardware connections annually -- check that standoff fittings are tight and channel systems are free of debris. Stainless steel hardware can be cleaned with stainless steel cleaner to maintain its finish. We provide maintenance guidelines specific to your system at installation.
