Codes and Standards
Fitness environments present unique glass hazards from impact, humidity, and heavy use. Code compliance is not optional -- it is essential for member safety and liability protection.
All glass in hazardous locations -- including doors, sidelights, walls adjacent to walking surfaces, and areas near exercise equipment -- must be safety glazing (tempered or laminated). This is the minimum federal standard for architectural glass.
The American National Standard for safety glazing requires glass to withstand specified impact levels. In gym environments where dropped weights and equipment create constant impact risk, this standard is critical for every glass surface.
While building codes do not specifically address mirrors, best practice in gym environments dictates using safety-backed mirrors (vinyl-backed or film-backed) or tempered mirror glass to prevent shard injuries. Our installations always exceed minimum requirements.

A boutique fitness franchise opening its first Arlington location needed full-wall mirrors in four studios (group fitness, cycling, yoga, and personal training), three glass partition walls separating the studios from the main floor, and a new storefront installation for street visibility.
We coordinated with the general contractor to install wall blocking during framing, then returned for mirror and glass installation after painting was complete. The hot yoga studio received moisture-resistant mirrors with enhanced edge sealing. All partition glass was 1/2-inch tempered with acoustic interlayers between the cycling studio and reception area. The gym opened on schedule with zero punch list items on our scope.
