Types of Damage

Common Storm Glass Damage in the DMV

The Mid-Atlantic region experiences a wide range of severe weather. Here is how each type affects your glass.

Hail Impact

Spring–Fall

Hailstones as small as 1" can crack or shatter glass, especially older or single-pane windows. Hail damage often appears as circular impact points, spiderweb cracks, or complete breakage. The DMV sees significant hailstorms from April through September.

High Wind Pressure

Year-round

Sustained winds above 50 mph can flex and crack window glass. Derecho events — which hit the DMV periodically — can produce winds exceeding 75 mph, equivalent to a Category 1 hurricane.

Flying Debris

Spring–Fall

Branches, patio furniture, signs, and construction materials become projectiles in severe storms. A 2x4 becomes a deadly missile at 60 mph — and glass does not stand a chance.

Tree Impacts

Year-round

Fallen limbs and full trees account for a significant share of storm glass damage in the DMV's tree-dense suburbs. Northern Virginia and Maryland's mature tree canopy is beautiful — until a storm hits.

Ice Accumulation

Winter

Ice storms and freezing rain load windows and frames with enormous weight. Thermal stress from rapid freeze-thaw cycles can crack glass seals and frames, especially on older double-pane units.

Pressure Differentials

All major storms

Extreme low-pressure systems create suction forces that can pop window seals and, in severe cases, pull glass panels inward. Skylights are particularly vulnerable to pressure-related storm damage.

Our Response Process

Emergency Board-Up Process

From your call to secured property — here is exactly what happens.

1

Dispatch Within Minutes

We answer calls and dispatch storm-response teams as quickly as possible. During widespread storm events, we prioritize calls by urgency — complete breakage, ground-floor exposures, and commercial properties receive first response.

2

Site Assessment

Our technician documents all damage on arrival: photographs, measurements, glass type, and frame condition. This documentation is used for both our work order and your insurance claim.

3

Professional Board-Up

We use exterior-grade plywood fastened with weather-resistant hardware — not flimsy cardboard or plastic sheeting. Our board-ups are weather-tight and secure enough to withstand another storm while you wait for permanent repair.

4

Insurance Documentation

We provide a complete damage package: photos, measurements, glass specifications, and itemized estimates. Our documentation is formatted to meet the requirements of all major insurance carriers. You submit our paperwork for reimbursement.

5

Permanent Glass Replacement

Once your claim is in progress (or if you prefer out-of-pocket repair), we schedule permanent glass replacement. Most standard residential glass can be installed within 24–48 hours of the board-up.

Insurance Claims

Storm Damage Is Often Covered

Hail, wind, and storm damage are commonly covered perils under most homeowner's and commercial property insurance policies. Filing your claim promptly and with the right documentation is key to a smooth reimbursement.

Expert Glass Repair has worked with adjusters from every major insurance carrier in the DMV. We know what they need — and we provide it proactively, so your claim moves faster.

What We Provide for Your Claim

  • Timestamped damage photographs
  • Itemized repair estimate with glass specifications
  • Separate board-up and permanent repair invoices
  • Direct adjuster communication upon request
  • Signed documentation of work performed

Insurance Tips for Storm Damage Claims

File Immediately
Most policies require prompt reporting of storm damage. Do not wait — file the same day the damage occurs.
Document Before Cleaning Up
Photograph and video all damage before removing debris or making temporary repairs. Your insurer needs to see the full extent.
Get a Professional Damage Assessment
A professional assessment from a licensed glass contractor carries more weight than homeowner estimates. We provide this free of charge.
Ask About Deductibles
Many DMV homeowners have separate wind/hail deductibles that differ from their standard deductible. Know your numbers before filing.
Don't Use Non-Licensed Contractors
Insurance companies may reject claims where unlicensed contractors performed emergency repairs. Always verify licensing.
Keep All Receipts
Document every expense related to the storm damage, including temporary repairs, hotels if the home was uninhabitable, and emergency board-up costs.
DMV Storm Calendar

When Storms Are Most Likely in the DMV

The Washington DC metro area experiences year-round storm risk. Knowing your season helps you prepare and respond fast.

March – May
Spring Storms

Severe thunderstorm season begins. Hail, high winds, and tornadoes are possible. 2012's derecho struck in late June — a reminder that the DMV is not immune to catastrophic straight-line wind events.

High Risk
June – August
Peak Thunderstorm Season

The hottest months bring the most severe weather. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms with golf-ball hail and 70+ mph wind gusts are not unusual. Hurricane remnants occasionally impact the region.

Very High Risk
September – November
Hurricane Season & Fall Winds

The DMV sits in the path of weakening Atlantic hurricanes. Tropical Storm Ida (2021) dropped historic rainfall and spawned tornadoes in northern Virginia. Nor'easters begin in October.

High Risk
December – February
Winter Storms & Ice Events

Ice storms — the DMV's most destructive winter weather type — coat glass and frames with pounds of ice. Blizzards bring heavy snow loads and high winds. Glass repair is available year-round, even mid-storm.

Moderate Risk

Storm Season Pro Tip

Don't wait for storm season to inspect your windows. Window seals weakened over the winter are more likely to fail under spring storm pressure. Schedule a free pre-storm inspection and we will identify vulnerable glass before the first severe storm hits.

FAQ

Storm Damage Glass Repair — Common Questions

Can you respond during or immediately after a storm?
We monitor severe weather across the DMV and pre-position response teams before major storms hit when possible. During active storm events, safety comes first — we will not put our technicians at risk driving in dangerous conditions. But once it is safe to travel, we dispatch immediately. For storm-adjacent calls, we work to get on-site as quickly as possible after the storm passes.
Does homeowner's insurance cover storm glass damage?
Storm damage is generally a covered peril under most homeowner's and commercial property policies. Hail, wind, falling trees, and flying debris are often covered. You'll be responsible for your deductible. We provide detailed claim-ready documentation -- photos, measurements, and itemized invoices -- that you submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.
What if multiple windows are broken — can you handle large-scale damage?
Absolutely. We have multiple crews and can coordinate a large-scale storm response across an entire property. For commercial properties or multi-family buildings, we can dispatch multiple vehicles simultaneously. Call us and describe the scope — we will staff accordingly.
My window didn't break but the seal looks damaged after the storm. Should I be concerned?
Yes. Impact, thermal stress from a sudden temperature change, or water infiltration from a storm can damage the seal of a double-pane window without immediate visible breakage. Signs include new condensation inside the glass, a hazy appearance, or drafts from previously sealed windows. Call us for a post-storm inspection.
How long does storm damage window repair take?
Emergency board-up can be completed within hours. Permanent glass replacement for standard residential windows typically takes 1–2 days after the board-up. Custom or commercial glass may take 3–5 days to fabricate. We always prioritize getting permanent glass in place as quickly as possible.
Should I try to cover the window myself while waiting?
A light covering like a plastic trash bag taped over the inside of the opening is fine to reduce wind and rain entry temporarily. Avoid nailing or screwing anything into wooden frames — it can cause additional damage. Do not stand on furniture near broken glass or attempt to remove large shards.
