The Science

How Smart Glass Works

PDLC smart glass uses Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal technology. A thin film containing microscopic liquid crystal droplets is laminated between two glass panes with transparent ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) electrode coatings.

Power OFF -- OpaqueGlass PaneITO ElectrodePDLC Film LayerITO ElectrodeGlass Pane0V AppliedCrystals scatter light= Privacy (frosted)VoltageAppliedPower ON -- TransparentGlass PaneITO Electrode (+)PDLC Film LayerITO Electrode (-)Glass Pane48V ACCrystals align with field= Transparent (clear)E-FieldRandom CrystalAligned CrystalLight Ray
01

Power Off = Private

With no electrical current, liquid crystal droplets inside the PDLC film are randomly oriented. They scatter incoming light in all directions, creating a uniformly frosted, opaque surface that blocks visibility while still transmitting ambient light.

02

Voltage Applied = Clear

When low-voltage AC current (typically 48V) is applied to the ITO electrodes, the electric field causes all liquid crystal droplets to align in the same direction. Light passes through unimpeded, and the glass becomes transparent.

03

Instant Switching

The transition from opaque to transparent takes less than one second. Switching back is equally fast -- remove the voltage and the crystals return to their random state immediately. Over 100,000 cycles with no degradation.

Benefits

Why Choose Smart Glass?

Smart glass is more than a privacy solution. It reduces energy costs, protects interiors from UV damage, improves acoustics, and elevates the design of any space.

Instant Privacy Control

Switch from fully transparent to completely frosted in under one second. No waiting for blinds to lower, curtains to close, or motors to engage.

Energy Savings

Smart glass in its opaque state blocks up to 50% of solar heat gain, significantly reducing cooling costs.

UV Protection

PDLC smart glass blocks over 99% of UV-A and UV-B radiation in both its clear and opaque states.

Noise Reduction

The laminated construction of smart glass -- two panes of glass with a PDLC interlayer -- provides superior acoustic insulation compared to single-pane.

Modern Aesthetics

Smart glass eliminates the need for blinds, shades, curtains, and other window treatments.

Low Maintenance

Smart glass has no moving parts, no motors, no tracks, no fabric. The PDLC film is sealed inside the laminated glass unit, protected from dust, moisture.

Technology Comparison

Smart Glass Types

Not all smart glass is the same. Each technology has different switching speeds, tinting capabilities, and ideal use cases. We help you select the right type for your project.

PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal)

Liquid crystals in a polymer matrix align when voltage is applied, switching from opaque/frosted to transparent.

Under 1 secondConference rooms

Advantages

  • Near-instant switching
  • Works as projection surface when opaque
  • Low power consumption (5-7W per sqm)
  • Available in large panel sizes

Limitations

  • Requires continuous power to stay clear
  • Does not provide graduated tinting
  • Slightly hazy compared to plain glass when clear

SPD (Suspended Particle Device)

Nano-scale particles in a film align with an electric field to control the amount of light passing through. Offers variable tinting.

1-3 secondsVehicle glazing

Advantages

  • Variable tinting (not just on/off)
  • Excellent solar heat control
  • Blocks glare while maintaining view
  • Good for exterior applications

Limitations

  • Higher energy consumption than PDLC
  • More expensive per square foot
  • Limited to darker tint range (not fully clear)

Electrochromic

A thin electrochromic coating changes color through an electrochemical reaction when low voltage is applied. Tints gradually from clear to dark blue.

5-20 minutesBuilding facades

Advantages

  • Very low power (only during transitions)
  • Maintains tint state without power
  • Excellent for large-scale building facades
  • Gradual, elegant transition effect

Limitations

  • Slow transition time
  • Cannot provide full opacity/privacy
  • Higher upfront cost
  • Limited to blue/gray tint range

Thermochromic

Glass coating changes tint automatically in response to temperature. No electrical power or controls required -- purely passive.

Gradual (temperature-driven)Passive solar control on south-facing windows and skylights where automatic response to heat is desired

Advantages

  • Zero energy consumption
  • No wiring or controls needed
  • Automatic response to heat
  • Maintenance-free operation

Limitations

  • No manual control
  • Cannot provide privacy
  • Limited tinting range
  • Response depends on ambient temperature

Our Process

How We Install Smart Glass

Every smart glass installation requires careful planning of electrical routing, glass sizing, and control system integration. Here is our proven four-step process.

01

Technical Consultation

We assess your space, review electrical infrastructure, discuss control system preferences (wall switch, remote, app, or automation integration), and determine the right smart glass technology for your application.

02

System Engineering

Our team calculates power loads, designs concealed wire routing from the transformer to each glass panel, and specifies the control interface. We coordinate with your electrician or provide our own licensed crew.

03

Custom Manufacturing

PDLC film is laminated between two panes of tempered glass at the factory, custom-cut to your exact dimensions. Lead time is typically 3-4 weeks. The transformer and control components are sourced simultaneously.

04

Certified Installation

We install the glass panels, connect the low-voltage wiring, mount the transformer, program the control system, and test every panel. We walk you through operation and provide complete documentation.

Common Questions

Smart Glass FAQ

How does PDLC smart glass work?
PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) smart glass contains a thin film of liquid crystals sandwiched between two layers of glass. When no electrical current is applied, the crystals are randomly oriented and scatter light, making the glass appear frosted or opaque. When voltage is applied (typically 48V AC), the crystals align and the glass becomes transparent. The transition takes less than one second.
Does smart glass block light completely in its opaque state?
PDLC smart glass does not block light entirely -- it scatters it. In its opaque state, PDLC glass blocks visibility while still allowing diffused natural light to pass through, so rooms remain bright without being see-through. For applications requiring true blackout or variable darkening, electrochromic or SPD glass can achieve deeper tinting.
Can smart glass be used in wet environments like showers?
Yes. We install laminated PDLC smart glass designed specifically for wet environments. The PDLC film is hermetically sealed between two layers of tempered glass, protecting it completely from moisture. Smart glass shower enclosures are one of the most popular luxury bathroom upgrades we install in the DC metro area.
How is smart glass controlled?
Smart glass can be controlled via a standard wall switch, wireless remote control, a touch panel, a smartphone app, or integrated into building automation systems like Control4, Crestron, Savant, or Apple HomeKit. Voice control through Amazon Alexa and Google Home is also supported when connected through a compatible smart home hub.
What is the lifespan of smart glass?
Quality PDLC smart glass has a rated lifespan exceeding 20 years and can withstand over 100,000 switching cycles. The glass itself -- tempered and laminated -- is built to last decades. We use only UL-listed, commercial-grade PDLC film from established manufacturers with verified longevity testing.
Does smart glass require a lot of electricity?
No. PDLC smart glass uses approximately 5 to 7 watts per square meter in its transparent (powered on) state. In its opaque (off) state, it uses zero electricity. This is far less energy than motorized blinds and the energy savings from reduced HVAC load often more than offset the modest operating cost.
Can existing windows be converted to smart glass?
In many cases, yes. PDLC switchable film can be applied to existing glass surfaces as a retrofit. However, for the best optical clarity, durability, and warranty, we recommend purpose-built smart glass panels where the PDLC film is laminated between two panes during manufacturing. We assess each project individually during our free consultation.
