Common Questions

Steam Shower Glass FAQ

How is a steam shower enclosure different from a regular shower?
A steam shower enclosure must be fully sealed to contain steam within the shower space. This means the glass extends from floor to ceiling, all joints have vapor-tight seals, the door uses compression seals, and there is a transom panel above the door to prevent steam from escaping over the top. Regular shower enclosures have gaps for ventilation that would let steam escape.
Does steam shower glass need to go to the ceiling?
Yes. For proper steam containment, the glass enclosure must extend from the top of the curb or shower pan to the ceiling. Any gap at the top would allow steam to escape into the bathroom, which defeats the purpose and can cause moisture damage to the bathroom. We custom-fabricate each panel to match your exact ceiling height.
What glass thickness is needed for a steam shower?
We recommend 3/8 inch (10mm) or 1/2 inch (12mm) tempered glass for steam shower enclosures. The thicker glass provides better thermal insulation and structural rigidity for the taller panels required by floor-to-ceiling installations. All glass is tempered for safety.
Can you add a steam shower to an existing bathroom?
Yes. If your bathroom has adequate ventilation, proper waterproofing, and a compatible layout, we can install a steam shower glass enclosure. The bathroom will need a steam generator (which we can recommend but do not install) and the shower space needs to be properly waterproofed and vapor-sealed by your contractor. We handle the glass enclosure portion.
How do you seal a steam shower enclosure?
We use specialized compression seals, silicone gaskets, and weather-stripping rated for high-temperature steam environments at every joint, panel edge, and door perimeter. The door uses magnetic strips plus compression gaskets. The transom panel above the door is sealed with silicone. These seals maintain steam pressure while allowing the door to open and close normally.
Does steam shower glass fog up?
The inside of the glass will naturally fog during steam use -- that is normal and expected. We offer optional anti-fog coatings and heated glass panels that reduce fogging, but most homeowners embrace the spa-like atmosphere that the steam creates. The glass clears quickly once the steam generator is turned off.
