The Manufacturing Process

How Patterned Glass Is Made

Patterned glass is manufactured using the roller method -- one of the oldest glass-forming techniques, refined over more than a century of industrial production. Unlike standard float glass (which is perfectly smooth on both sides), patterned glass is intentionally textured during forming.

The key difference is the roller: while the glass is still soft and molten, it passes between textured metal rollers that press the desired pattern into one or both surfaces. The pattern is permanent -- it is part of the glass structure, not a surface treatment.

One smooth side, one textured side: Most patterned glass has one smooth face and one textured face. The textured side is typically installed facing inward for easier exterior cleaning and weather sealing.

1
Melting & Float
Raw glass materials (silica sand, soda ash, limestone) are melted at approximately 1,500 degrees C and formed into a continuous ribbon of molten glass on the float bath, just as in standard float glass production.
2
Roller Impression
While the glass is still soft and pliable (around 850 degrees C), it passes between one or two textured metal rollers. The roller surfaces carry the negative of the desired pattern, which is pressed into the soft glass as it passes through.
3
Controlled Cooling (Annealing)
The patterned glass ribbon enters an annealing lehr -- a long, temperature-controlled oven that slowly cools the glass to relieve internal stresses. Proper annealing prevents spontaneous cracking and ensures safe cutting.
4
Cutting & Processing
The annealed patterned glass is cut to stock sheet sizes. It can then be cut to custom dimensions, tempered for safety, laminated for security, or fabricated into insulated glass units.
Pattern Options

Popular Patterned Glass Types

Each pattern offers a different balance of privacy, light transmission, and aesthetic character.

Rain

Irregular vertical streaks resembling rain running down a window. The organic, random pattern provides moderate privacy while maintaining significant light transmission. One of the most popular patterns for residential applications.

Privacy Level
Moderate

Best For
Shower enclosures, interior doors, sidelights
Available in tempered, laminated, and IGU configurations
Reeded (Reed)

Uniform parallel vertical ribs running the full height of the glass. Creates a refined, linear effect that blurs horizontal detail while preserving some vertical visibility. The defining glass pattern of the current decade.

Privacy Level
Moderate to High
Light Transmission

Best For
Interior doors, office partitions, cabinet fronts, shower enclosures
Available in tempered, laminated, and IGU configurations
Fluted

Similar to reeded but with deeper, wider channels that create a more pronounced optical distortion. Fluted glass has a bolder visual presence and provides higher privacy. Used in statement doors, feature walls, and high-end cabinetry.

Privacy Level
High
Light Transmission
70-80%
Best For
Feature walls, statement doors, commercial spaces
Available in tempered, laminated, and IGU configurations
Hammered

Irregular dimpled texture resembling hand-hammered metal. The random, organic pattern scatters light beautifully and provides excellent privacy. Common in traditional and craftsman-style homes.

Privacy Level
High
Light Transmission
70-80%
Best For
Cabinet doors, transoms, craftsman homes
Available in tempered, laminated, and IGU configurations
Cross-Reed

A grid pattern created by intersecting horizontal and vertical ribs. Provides the highest privacy of any standard pattern due to the double-axis distortion. Used where maximum visual obscurity is needed while still admitting light.

Privacy Level
Very High

Best For
Medical offices, bathrooms, utility areas

Applications

Where We Install Patterned Glass

Expert Glass Repair installs patterned glass for residential and commercial applications throughout DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland.

Interior Doors

Patterned glass transforms interior doors from barriers into design features. Reeded and fluted glass are the dominant choice for French doors, pocket doors, pantry doors, and home office doors throughout the DMV.

Shower Enclosures

Rain and reeded glass shower enclosures provide privacy without the need for curtains while creating a spa-like aesthetic. Available in tempered glass at all standard shower thicknesses (3/8" and 1/2").

Office & Commercial

Reeded and fluted glass partitions are the dominant design trend in modern commercial interiors. They provide visual separation while maintaining the open, light-filled quality that contemporary office design demands.

Sidelights & Transoms

Patterned glass in entry door sidelights and transoms provides privacy while admitting light and adding architectural interest. Hammered glass is especially popular for craftsman and traditional DMV homes.

Cabinet & Furniture Glass

Reeded and seeded patterned glass in kitchen cabinets, bar fronts, and display cases conceals contents while adding texture and visual interest. A major trend in DMV kitchen renovations.

Decorative Features

Room dividers, stair railings, wall panels, and decorative partitions all benefit from patterned glass. The texture adds visual weight and interest that plain frosted glass cannot match.

  • Can be tempered, laminated, and fabricated into insulated glass units
  • Wide variety of patterns available to match any architectural style
  • Adds significant design value and perceived quality to any space

Limitations

FAQ

Patterned Glass Questions Answered

Common questions about patterned glass types, privacy levels, and installation options.

What is the most popular patterned glass right now?
Reeded glass is by far the most popular patterned glass in current residential and commercial design. Its clean, vertical linear pattern works with virtually every design style -- from minimalist modern to transitional. Fluted glass (deeper channels than reeded) is the second most requested pattern. Both are readily available and can be tempered for safety applications.
Can patterned glass be tempered for safety?
Yes. Most standard patterned glass can be tempered for use in safety glazing locations (doors, showers, low windows). The glass must be tempered before any other processing. Not all patterns are available in tempered form -- some specialty patterns are too thick or irregularly textured for reliable tempering. We verify availability for each pattern before ordering.
Which pattern provides the most privacy?
Cross-reed (intersecting horizontal and vertical ribs) provides the highest privacy of any standard pattern -- shapes are almost completely indiscernible through the glass. Hammered glass also provides very high privacy due to its random, multidirectional distortion. Rain and standard reeded provide moderate privacy -- you can see color and movement but not detail.
Is reeded glass the same as fluted glass?
They are similar but not identical. Reeded glass has narrow, closely spaced parallel ribs. Fluted glass has wider, deeper channels with more space between them. Fluted glass creates a bolder visual effect and slightly higher privacy. In casual usage, the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but when ordering, the distinction matters.
Can patterned glass be used in double-pane (IGU) windows?
Yes. Patterned glass can be incorporated into insulated glass units (IGUs) for energy efficiency. Typically, the patterned pane is used as the interior lite with the textured side facing inward, and a standard clear or Low-E pane is used as the exterior lite. This gives you the decorative pattern on the inside with full weatherproofing and energy performance.
How do I clean patterned glass?
The smooth side of patterned glass cleans like any standard glass. The textured side requires slightly more attention -- use a soft brush or microfiber cloth with glass cleaner to reach into the pattern grooves. Avoid abrasive cleaners or pads that could damage the pattern. For shower applications, a squeegee after each use prevents mineral buildup in the texture.
Do you install patterned glass shower doors?
Yes. Patterned glass shower doors and enclosures -- particularly rain and reeded patterns -- are one of our most requested installations. All shower glass is tempered to safety glazing standards. We offer frameless, semi-frameless, and framed configurations in patterned glass throughout the DMV.
Can patterned glass be used for office partitions?
Absolutely. Reeded and fluted glass partitions are among the dominant trends in modern commercial interiors. They provide visual separation for conference rooms and private offices while maintaining the open, light-filled quality that contemporary office design demands. We install patterned glass partitions for businesses throughout the DMV.
