Healthcare Facilities

Ballistic-rated glass for hospital emergency departments, psychiatric facilities, pharmacy windows, and reception areas. Healthcare environments require glazing that stops projectiles while meeting fire-rated, acoustic, and hygiene requirements.

Materials

Ballistic Glazing Materials

Different materials offer different balances of protection level, weight, thickness, optical clarity, and lifespan. We select the right product for your specific requirements.

Glass-Clad Polycarbonate

The most common bulletproof glazing type. Multiple layers of glass and polycarbonate bonded with polyurethane interlayers. The glass exterior provides scratch resistance and weather durability, while the polycarbonate core absorbs projectile energy. The inner polycarbonate layer acts as a spall shield, preventing glass fragments from entering the protected space.

All-Glass Laminated

Multiple layers of glass bonded with PVB (polyvinyl butyral) interlayers. All-glass products offer the best optical clarity and longest lifespan but are heavier than glass-clad polycarbonate at the same protection level. Preferred for architectural applications where appearance and longevity are priorities.

Acrylic (Bullet-Resistant)

Solid acrylic (polymethyl methacrylate) sheets in thicknesses from 1.25 to 1.375 inches provide Level 1-2 protection. Acrylic is the lightest bullet-resistant material and can be thermoformed into curved shapes. However, acrylic scratches more easily than glass and may not meet all code requirements for fire-rated assemblies.

Polycarbonate Sheet

Solid polycarbonate provides excellent impact resistance at relatively thin profiles. Polycarbonate is 250 times more impact resistant than glass by weight. It is used as a spall shield on the interior face of glass-clad systems and as a standalone forced-entry barrier for lower threat levels.

Transaction Accessories & Communication Devices

Bulletproof glass barriers require transaction accessories that allow business to continue while maintaining the ballistic protection line. We install pass-through deal trays, package passers, speak-through communication devices, and intercom systems that are rated to the same UL 752 level as the surrounding glazing.

Transaction devices are critical for banks, pharmacies, and government counters where documents, currency, and packages must be exchanged between the protected and public sides. All devices are rated to maintain the ballistic integrity of the barrier system and are tested as part of the overall UL 752 assembly.

Deal Trays

Recessed and surface-mounted trays for passing documents, currency, and small items through the ballistic barrier.

Package Passers

Larger pass-through units for exchanging boxes, bags, and bulkier items while maintaining the ballistic line.

Speak-Through Devices

Natural voice communication through the barrier without electronic amplification, using precision-drilled ports.

Intercom Systems

Electronic communication systems for thicker barriers or high-noise environments where speak-throughs are insufficient.

How We Work

Our Installation Process

01

Threat Assessment

We work with you or your security consultant to define the threat level, identify the areas requiring ballistic protection,

02

Product Selection & Design

Based on the threat assessment, we select the appropriate glazing product, specify frame systems, and design transaction accessories (deal trays,

03

Frame & Structure Prep

Bulletproof glass requires reinforced frames and often structural modifications to the surrounding wall. We install steel reinforcement,

04

Installation & Testing

Ballistic glass panels are installed in the reinforced frames, sealed, and all transaction devices are connected and tested. We verify proper fit, seal integrity, and operational function of all pass-through and communication devices. Documentation of the UL rating is provided for your records.

Standards & Compliance

Ballistic Glazing Certifications

Every bulletproof glass product we install is independently tested and certified to recognized standards. We provide full documentation for your records, insurance, and regulatory compliance.

UL 752

Underwriters Laboratories

The primary North American standard for bullet-resisting glazing. Defines 10 protection levels based on projectile type, velocity, and number of impacts. All products we install carry current UL 752 listing marks.

NIJ 0108.01

National Institute of Justice

The NIJ standard for ballistic-resistant protective materials used in criminal justice applications. Relevant for law enforcement facilities, courthouses, and detention centers in the DC metro area.

ASTM F1233

ASTM International

Standard test method for security glazing materials and systems. Covers forced-entry resistance testing that complements ballistic ratings for comprehensive security barrier performance.

HPW-TP-0100

U.S. State Department

Forced-entry/ballistic-resistant (FE/BR) standard for embassy and diplomatic facility glazing. Required for embassy compounds, consulates, and diplomatic residences throughout the Washington DC area.

GSA Standards

General Services Administration

Federal building security standards that specify ballistic glazing requirements based on facility security level. We work with GSA specifications for federal building projects across DC, Virginia, and Maryland.

ISC Security Criteria

Interagency Security Committee

Facility security level designations (I through V) that determine ballistic glazing requirements for federal buildings. Higher ISC levels require higher UL 752 protection ratings for perimeter and interior glazing.

Weight & Structural Requirements

Bulletproof glass is dramatically heavier than standard glazing. A typical 4-foot by 5-foot UL 752 Level 3 panel weighs over 200 pounds -- compared to 40 pounds for standard tempered glass of the same size. This weight has significant implications for frame systems, wall structure, and installation logistics.

Steel-reinforced frame systems rated for ballistic panel weight

Structural wall assessment and reinforcement where needed

Heavy-duty hardware and anchoring systems

Crane or mechanical lift access for upper-floor installations

Fire Rating & Code Compliance

Bulletproof glass installations in commercial and institutional buildings must comply with local fire and building codes. Glass-clad polycarbonate products may have different fire-rating characteristics than all-glass systems. We coordinate with code officials and fire marshals to ensure every installation meets applicable requirements.

Fire-rated framing systems for code-required assemblies

Smoke and draft control at barrier transitions

Common Questions

Bulletproof Glass FAQ

What is UL 752 rated bulletproof glass?
UL 752 is the Underwriters Laboratories standard for bullet-resisting equipment. It rates glazing materials from Level 1 through Level 10 based on the caliber, velocity, and number of rounds the glass must stop. Level 1 stops 9mm handgun rounds, while Level 8 stops 7.62mm rifle rounds. We install UL 752 rated products that have been independently tested and certified.
How thick is bulletproof glass?
Bulletproof glass thickness varies by protection level. UL 752 Level 1 glass-clad polycarbonate is typically 3/4 inch to 1 inch thick. Level 3 products range from 1 inch to 1.25 inches. Higher levels (5-8) can be 1.5 to 2.5 inches thick. Acrylic-based products tend to be thicker but lighter than glass-clad alternatives at the same protection level.
Can bulletproof glass be installed in existing window frames?
In many cases, existing window frames cannot support the weight and thickness of bulletproof glass. Bulletproof panels are significantly heavier and thicker, requiring reinforced frames, upgraded hardware, and sometimes structural modifications. We assess existing conditions and specify the modifications needed for each installation.
Does bulletproof glass look different from regular glass?
Modern bulletproof glass can be virtually indistinguishable from standard glass to the casual observer. Glass-clad polycarbonate products offer excellent optical clarity. However, bulletproof glass is noticeably thicker at the edges, and some products may have a slight tint. We select products with the best optical properties for each application.
How long does bulletproof glass last?
Glass-clad polycarbonate products have a functional lifespan of 15 to 20 years before the polycarbonate interlayers may begin to delaminate or yellow. All-glass laminated products can last 25 years or longer. We recommend inspection every 5 years and replacement when degradation is observed.
Is bulletproof glass required for banks?
Federal regulations do not mandate bulletproof glass in all banks, but the Bank Protection Act requires security devices and procedures. Most bank security consultants recommend UL 752 Level 1 or Level 2 glazing for teller windows. Insurance carriers may require or incentivize bullet-resistant glazing as a condition of coverage.
What is the difference between bulletproof and bullet-resistant glass?
The industry prefers the term bullet-resistant because no glazing material is truly impervious to all projectiles. Each product is rated to resist specific calibers at specific velocities for a specified number of rounds per UL 752 testing. Higher-caliber or higher-velocity rounds, or more rounds than the rated level, may penetrate the glazing.
How much does bulletproof glass weigh?
Bulletproof glass is significantly heavier than standard glass. UL 752 Level 1 glass-clad polycarbonate weighs approximately 6 to 8 pounds per square foot. Level 3 products weigh 10 to 14 pounds per square foot. Higher-level all-glass laminated products can weigh 20 or more pounds per square foot. This weight is a critical factor in frame and structural design.
Can bulletproof glass be curved or custom shaped?
Acrylic bullet-resistant materials can be thermoformed into curves and custom shapes. Glass-clad polycarbonate and all-glass laminated products are typically available only in flat panels due to the manufacturing process. Custom sizes are standard, but curved shapes require acrylic or specialized fabrication.
Do you install bulletproof glass in residences?
Yes. We install ballistic-rated glass in residential safe rooms, home offices, primary bedrooms, and entry doors for high-profile homeowners, diplomats, and government officials throughout the DC metro area. Residential installations focus on blending the ballistic glazing with existing architecture so the protection is not visually obvious.
What maintenance does bulletproof glass require?
Bulletproof glass requires minimal maintenance. Clean with mild soap and water or standard glass cleaner -- avoid abrasive pads that can scratch polycarbonate surfaces. We recommend professional inspection every 5 years to check for delamination, yellowing, seal degradation, or edge damage that could compromise the ballistic rating.
