Engineering

How Bullet-Resistant Glass Works

Bullet-resistant glass is not a single material -- it is a carefully engineered composite system. Multiple layers of glass, bonding interlayers, and polycarbonate work together to absorb ballistic energy and prevent penetration.

EXTERIOR GLASSPVB BONDINTERIOR GLASSPVB BONDPOLYCARBONATEFlattensprojectileBONDING LAYERAbsorbsenergyBONDING LAYERCatchesfragments(No-Spall)ImpactSAFETempered GlassPVB InterlayerPolycarbonate

Outer Glass Layer

The exterior tempered glass face is the first point of contact. It is hard and rigid, designed to flatten the incoming projectile and spread the impact force across a wider area before transferring energy to the inner layers.

PVB Interlayer

Polyvinyl butyral (PVB) bonding interlayers are flexible, energy-absorbing membranes between each rigid layer. They hold the composite together, distribute impact forces, and prevent delamination under ballistic stress.

Polycarbonate Backing

The interior polycarbonate layer is the final line of defense. It is flexible and virtually unbreakable, acting as a “catcher’s mitt” that absorbs remaining energy and contains glass fragments to prevent dangerous spalling.

Standards

UL 752 Protection Levels

UL 752 is the Underwriters Laboratories standard for bullet-resisting equipment. Each level defines the specific weapon, ammunition, velocity, and number of shots the glazing must withstand without penetration.

Common Questions

Bullet-Resistant Glass FAQ

What is bullet-resistant glass made of?
Bullet-resistant glass is a multi-layer composite of tempered glass, polycarbonate, and bonding interlayers (PVB or polyurethane). The outer glass layer flattens the projectile on impact, the interlayers absorb and distribute kinetic energy, and the inner polycarbonate layer catches fragments to prevent dangerous spalling on the protected side. The number and thickness of layers varies by UL 752 protection level.
What is the difference between bulletproof and bullet-resistant glass?
No glass is truly bulletproof. The correct industry term is bullet-resistant because all glazing systems are rated to stop specific threats defined by weapon type, caliber, velocity, and number of shots. UL 752 testing certifies resistance from Level 1 (9mm handgun, 3 shots) through Level 8 (7.62mm rifle, 5 shots). The glass defeats the rated threat, not every conceivable threat.
Can bullet-resistant glass be retrofitted into existing buildings?
In many cases, yes. However, BR glass can weigh 10 times more per square foot than standard glass. Retrofitting typically requires reinforcing the window frame, surrounding wall structure, and potentially the floor. We perform a complete structural assessment before every retrofit project to ensure the building can safely support the additional load.
Does bullet-resistant glass look different from regular glass?
Modern BR glass is designed to be visually discreet. Lower-level systems (UL Level 1-3) can be as thin as 3/4 inch and are nearly indistinguishable from standard glazing. Higher-level systems (Level 4-8) are thicker and may have a slight tint, but they still provide clear visibility. We work to integrate BR glazing seamlessly with your existing architecture.
What is spalling and how do you prevent it?
Spalling occurs when a bullet impact on the exterior face causes the interior face to fracture and launch dangerous glass fragments toward the people the glass is protecting. No-spall bullet-resistant glass includes an inner polycarbonate layer that contains these fragments, ensuring the protected side remains safe from flying debris even after multiple ballistic impacts.
How long does bullet-resistant glass installation take?
Timeline depends on the project scope and protection level. A single transaction window may take 1-2 days. A complete storefront conversion with multiple BR panels, transaction hardware, and ballistic framing typically takes 1-3 weeks from fabrication through installation. We coordinate scheduling to minimize disruption, especially for operating businesses and government facilities.
Do you install transaction windows and package passers?
Yes. For banks, dispensaries, pharmacies, and late-night retail, we install complete BR transaction systems including secure pass-through drawers, package passers, ballistic transaction speakers, and document exchange trays. These components are integrated into the BR glazing system for seamless, secure customer interaction.
