Anatomy

Inside a Glass Countertop

Understanding the layers that make glass countertops strong, beautiful, and functional. Every layer is engineered for durability and aesthetics.

Tempered Glass

The top layer is 1/2-inch to 1-inch tempered glass, heat-treated to be 4-5 times stronger than regular glass. It resists scratches, impacts, and thermal shock.

Back-Paint Layer

For colored countertops, opaque paint is applied to the glass back and kiln-bonded at high temperature. The paint becomes a permanent part of the glass and will not peel, fade, or yellow.

Substrate Support

A plywood or MDF substrate provides structural support beneath the glass. The substrate is bonded to the glass with silicone adhesive, distributing loads evenly across the cabinet framework.

LED Channel

Optional LED lighting channels can be integrated beneath the glass edge or across the full underside. Warm white or RGB LEDs transform the countertop into an illuminated design feature.

Finishing Details

Edge Profiles & Finishing Options

The edge profile defines the character of your countertop. Each profile is precision-ground and polished after tempering for a smooth, safe finish.

Flat Polish

A clean, squared-off edge with a high-gloss polish. The most popular edge profile for modern and minimalist kitchen designs. Creates a crisp, architectural line.

Beveled Edge

An angled cut along the top edge that catches light and adds a subtle decorative detail. Available in standard and custom bevel widths to suit your design.

Pencil Round

A softly rounded edge that is comfortable to lean against and safe for high-traffic areas. Popular for bathroom vanity tops and bar counters.

Ogee Edge

An S-shaped decorative profile that adds a traditional, elegant detail to the countertop edge. Works well in transitional and classic kitchen designs.

Waterfall Edge

The glass continues vertically down the side of the cabinet, creating a continuous flowing surface from counter to floor. A dramatic, high-end design statement.

Mitered Edge

Two pieces of glass are joined at a 45-degree angle to create the appearance of a thick slab edge. Adds visual weight and substance to the countertop.

Why Glass

Glass vs. Traditional Countertops

See how glass stacks up against granite and quartz across the metrics that matter most: hygiene, weight, light, and maintenance.

Non-Porous Surface

Unlike granite, marble, and concrete, glass has zero porosity. It will never absorb liquids, oils, or bacteria. There is no need for sealing -- not now,

Unlimited Color Options

Granite and quartz come in limited natural colors. Back-painted glass can be made in literally any color -- match your cabinets, walls,

Heat & Stain Resistant

Tempered glass resists heat up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and will not stain from wine, coffee, turmeric, or any common kitchen substance.

Sustainable & Recyclable

Glass is 100 percent recyclable without any loss in quality. Recycled glass countertops divert waste from landfills, and at the end of their long life,

Applications

Where Glass Countertops Shine

Kitchen Countertops

Glass countertops bring a clean, reflective surface to kitchen islands, perimeter counters, and breakfast bars. Back-painted glass in white, charcoal, or navy is a popular choice for modern kitchen renovations across the DMV.

Bathroom Vanity Tops

Glass vanity tops are naturally resistant to moisture, mold, and staining. They pair beautifully with vessel sinks and undermount basins, creating a sleek, spa-like aesthetic in master bathrooms and powder rooms.

Bar & Entertainment Areas

Home bars and entertainment counters benefit from glass surfaces that can be backlit with LED strips. Clear or tinted glass over illuminated substrates creates a dramatic focal point for entertaining spaces.

Reception Desks

Glass-topped reception desks and lobby counters convey a premium, professional image. Back-painted glass in brand colors reinforces corporate identity while providing a durable, easy-to-clean work surface.

Retail & Restaurant

Glass counters for retail display cases, restaurant service counters, and bakery showcases. The non-porous surface meets health code requirements and keeps products visible while maintaining a hygienic barrier.

Desktops & Conference Tables

Glass desk surfaces and conference table tops are easy to clean and add a modern, minimalist look to office environments. They resist ink, coffee, and marker stains without any special treatment.

Color Selection

Popular Glass Countertop Colors

Back-painted glass can be made in any color. Here are the most popular choices our DMV clients select for their kitchen and bathroom renovations.

Pure White

The most popular back-painted glass color. Pure white glass countertops brighten kitchens, expand visual space, and pair effortlessly with any cabinet finish. The glass surface adds a luminous depth that white stone or laminate cannot replicate.

Charcoal & Black

Dark glass countertops create dramatic contrast against white or light cabinetry. The reflective quality of glass means dark colors appear rich and dimensional rather than flat. A bold statement for modern and industrial-style kitchens.

Navy & Deep Blue

Navy glass countertops are trending in the DMV market. The color reads sophisticated and unexpected, adding personality without overwhelming the kitchen. Pairs beautifully with brass hardware and natural wood cabinetry.

Sage & Forest Green

Green glass countertops bring a natural, organic quality to kitchens and bathrooms. From soft sage to deep forest green, these colors connect the space to the outdoors and complement the biophilic design trend.

Warm Gray

A versatile neutral that bridges warm and cool palettes. Warm gray glass countertops work in virtually any kitchen design, from traditional to modern. The glass surface adds a subtle sheen that keeps the gray from looking dull.

Custom Color Match

We can match any color -- a specific Pantone shade, a swatch from your fabric or paint, or even a photo reference. Our color matching process ensures the back-painted glass is precisely the color you envision for your space.

Common Questions

Glass Countertop FAQ

Are glass countertops durable enough for kitchens?
Yes. Glass countertops are made from tempered glass that is 4 to 5 times stronger than regular glass. They resist scratches from normal kitchen use, withstand moderate heat, and will not stain from wine, oil, or acidic foods. For heavy-use kitchens, we recommend thicker glass (3/4 inch or 1 inch) for maximum durability.
What is back-painted glass?
Back-painted glass is tempered glass that has been coated with opaque paint on the back surface. The paint is permanently bonded to the glass through a baking process. The result is a smooth, glossy surface in any color you choose, with the depth and luminosity that only glass can provide.
Can glass countertops be custom sized?
Yes. Every glass countertop we fabricate is custom-cut to your exact dimensions. We template your counters on-site to ensure a precise fit, including cutouts for sinks, cooktops, and fixtures. Edges can be flat polished, beveled, or pencil-rounded to your preference.
How do you clean glass countertops?
Glass countertops are one of the easiest surfaces to clean. Simply wipe with a damp cloth or standard glass cleaner. The non-porous surface does not harbor bacteria, mold, or stains. There is no need for sealing, waxing, or special cleaning products -- ever.
Do glass countertops show fingerprints?
Clear glass countertops can show fingerprints similar to any glass surface. Back-painted glass, textured glass, and frosted glass options significantly reduce the visibility of fingerprints. We can help you choose a finish that balances aesthetics with practical maintenance considerations.
Can glass countertops be backlit?
Yes. Glass countertops are ideal for backlighting with LED strips. We can integrate LED channels beneath the countertop edge or across the full underside for a dramatic illuminated effect. RGB LEDs allow you to change colors to suit the mood or occasion.
How thick should a glass countertop be?
Standard glass countertops are 1/2 inch (12mm) thick, which is suitable for bathroom vanities and low-traffic surfaces. For kitchen countertops and heavy-use areas, we recommend 3/4 inch (19mm) or 1 inch (25mm) thick tempered glass. Thicker glass provides more strength, a more substantial visual presence, and better support over wider spans between cabinets.
Can glass countertops withstand hot pots and pans?
Tempered glass resists thermal shock far better than regular glass and can handle temperatures up to approximately 400 degrees Fahrenheit. However, placing an extremely hot pot directly from the stove onto a glass countertop is not recommended as a sustained practice. We recommend using trivets for very hot cookware, the same precaution that applies to virtually all countertop materials including granite and quartz.
What happens if a glass countertop breaks?
Because glass countertops are made from tempered (safety) glass, they break into small, relatively harmless fragments rather than large sharp shards. Breakage is extremely rare under normal use -- it would require a strong impact from a heavy, hard object. If breakage does occur, we can fabricate and install a replacement panel, and the modular nature of glass countertops means only the affected section needs replacement.
Do you offer a warranty on glass countertops?
Yes. We provide a workmanship warranty covering fabrication quality, edge finishing, color accuracy for back-painted glass, and installation. The tempered glass itself is virtually permanent under normal residential or commercial use conditions. Contact us for specific warranty terms and details for your project scope.
