Glass Types for Schools

Safety-Rated Glass for Every Educational Application

Every glass type we install in schools is selected for its safety rating, durability, and compliance with educational facility codes. We help you choose the right glass for each specific application.

Tempered Safety Glass

Heat-treated glass that is 4-5 times stronger than standard glass. When broken, it shatters into small, blunt granules rather than sharp shards.

CPSC 16 CFR 1201 Cat. I & II

Laminated Safety Glass

Two or more layers of glass bonded with a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer. When broken, the glass fragments adhere to the interlayer, keeping the panel.

ANSI Z97.1 / ASTM E1300

Impact-Resistant Glass

Multi-layered laminated glass engineered to resist forced entry, windborne debris, and deliberate impact.

ASTM E1886 / E1996

Bullet-Resistant Glass

Multiple layers of glass and polycarbonate designed to stop ballistic projectiles at rated threat levels. Available in UL levels 1 through 8.

UL 752 Levels 1-8

Wire Glass Replacement

Older schools often have wire-reinforced glass in fire doors and corridors. Modern fire-rated alternatives provide the same fire protection rating without.

NFPA 80 / UL 9

Insulated Glass Units (IGUs)

Double- and triple-pane sealed units that improve energy efficiency, reduce noise transmission, and eliminate condensation.

ENERGY STAR / NFRC Certified

Safety & Compliance

Code-Compliant Glass for Every School Installation

Educational facilities are governed by some of the most stringent glazing safety requirements in the building code. Every door, sidelight, low window, and panel near a walking surface must contain safety glazing that meets federal CPSC and ANSI standards.

Our technicians are trained to identify every hazardous location defined by the International Building Code Section 2406 and ensure the installed glass meets or exceeds the required safety rating. We document compliance for every installation, giving your administration confidence that your facility meets code.

Beyond basic safety glazing, we advise on security upgrades, fire-rated glass requirements, and energy code compliance. Many older schools still have wire glass in fire doors -- a material now recognized as a laceration hazard. We replace these with modern fire-rated alternatives that maintain fire ratings while eliminating the embedded wire.

Consumer Product Safety Commission

Federal standard requiring safety glazing in hazardous locations including doors, sidelights, panels adjacent to doors, and glass in areas where people.

ANSI Z97.1

American National Standards Institute

Performance specification for safety glazing materials used in buildings. Establishes test methods and performance criteria for tempered glass, laminated.

IBC Chapter 24

International Building Code

Section 2406 specifies hazardous locations requiring safety glazing in educational occupancies.

NFPA 80

Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives

Standard governing fire-rated glass in doors, sidelights, and transoms. Schools with fire-rated corridors require glass that maintains its fire rating.

Energy Cost Reduction

Insulated glass units (IGUs) with Low-E coatings reduce heat transfer by up to 50% compared to single-pane windows.

Classroom Acoustic Control

Laminated glass with acoustic interlayers reduces exterior noise transmission by 35-50%, creating quieter classrooms for better learning.

Natural Daylighting

Studies show that students in classrooms with more natural light perform 20-26% better on tests.

School Glass FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers for principals, facilities directors, and school district administrators.

Can your technicians work on school grounds during the school year?
Yes, with proper clearance. All our technicians pass comprehensive background checks and follow school district visitor protocols. We typically schedule work after hours, on weekends, or during school breaks, but can perform emergency repairs during school hours when student safety requires immediate attention.
What type of safety glass is required for schools?
Educational facilities require safety glazing (tempered or laminated) in doors, sidelights, areas near walking surfaces, and anywhere students may come into contact with glass. Specific requirements are governed by CPSC 16 CFR 1201 and ANSI Z97.1 standards. The International Building Code Section 2406 lists all hazardous locations in educational occupancies that require safety glazing.
Do you offer security glass for school entrances?
Yes. We install a full range of security glazing from basic laminated safety glass to UL 752-rated bullet-resistant systems. Options include forced-entry-resistant glass, blast-resistant glass, and attack-resistant glass for school entrances, vestibules, administrative offices, and reception areas. We can assess your campus and recommend the appropriate security level.
Can you work with our school district procurement process?
Absolutely. We are experienced with government and school district procurement requirements including competitive bidding, sole-source justification, proper documentation, prevailing wage compliance, W-9 and insurance certificate submissions, and performance bonds when required. We can register as a vendor with your district.
How quickly can you respond to a school glass emergency?
For school emergencies involving student safety or campus security, we provide priority response, typically arriving within 1-2 hours across the DMV area. We offer immediate board-up service to secure the opening while permanent replacement glass is sourced and installed. Emergency service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Do you handle summer maintenance glass projects for schools?
Yes. Summer break is our busiest season for school glass work. We handle large-scale window replacement projects, security upgrades, energy efficiency improvements, wire glass replacements, and deferred maintenance during the summer months when buildings are unoccupied. We recommend contacting us in spring to schedule your summer project and ensure material availability.
What about glass for school gymnasiums and athletic facilities?
Gymnasium and athletic facility glass requires impact-rated glazing that can withstand ball strikes and physical contact. We install polycarbonate glazing, safety film applications, wire glass replacements, and impact-resistant laminated glass specifically rated for athletic environments. All installations meet safety codes for educational sports facilities.
Are your technicians background-checked for school work?
Yes. Every technician assigned to school projects undergoes comprehensive background checks including criminal history, sex offender registry, and drug screening. We maintain current clearances with multiple school districts and can provide documentation to school administrators upon request. Our crews also follow all visitor sign-in protocols and badge requirements.
