Seasonal Guide — DMV Homeowners

Winter Glass Care Guide

Protect Your Windows This Season in the DMV

Cold temperatures, ice storms, and freeze-thaw cycles are hard on glass. Here is what DMV homeowners need to know to protect their windows — and when to call for help.

The Science

How Cold Weather Affects Glass

Glass is more vulnerable to cold than most homeowners realize. Understanding the mechanisms helps you catch problems early.

Thermal Stress Cracking

Moderate

When part of a window pane is warm (sunny side) while the rest is cold (shaded side or near AC register), the temperature differential creates internal stress. Large single-pane windows and poorly installed units are most susceptible. You may hear a sharp "crack" on a cold morning — this is thermal stress fracturing.

IGU Seal Failure

Very Common

Double-pane windows expand and contract with every temperature swing. DMV winters bring rapid freeze-thaw cycles — some days swing 40°F between morning and afternoon. This repeated stress degrades the silicone and butyl sealants around the window's perimeter, eventually allowing moisture infiltration.

Frame Contraction

Common

Window frames — especially older aluminum and wood frames — contract in cold weather. This can cause glass panels to shift, create air gaps at the edges, and in extreme cases, cause glass to crack where it contacts a contracted frame.

Ice Pressure

Seasonal Risk

Ice storms coat windows with a crystalline layer that, when it melts and refreezes, exerts outward pressure on glass and seals. Ice dams forming above windows can force water under flashing and into the window frame assembly.

Warning Signs

Signs Your Windows Are Failing This Winter

These symptoms tell you something is wrong. Know which ones need immediate attention and which can wait.

Drafts near the window

Fix before next cold snap

Air is getting through a failed seal, gap in the glazing compound, or crack in the glass.

Frost forming on the inside of the glass

Indicates poor insulation

The window is not insulating properly. Single-pane or failed IGU is unable to maintain a warm interior surface temperature.

Condensation between the panes

Replace IGU

The IGU seal has failed. Moisture is inside the sealed cavity. This is not fixable without replacing the glass unit.

Ice crystals on window frame corners

Frame upgrade may be needed

Cold bridges in the frame are freezing moisture from the interior air. Common in aluminum frames without thermal breaks.

Visible cracks in the glass

Repair or replace now

Could be thermal stress, impact, or frame pressure. Any cracked glass should be assessed — cracks propagate, especially through temperature cycles.

Higher heating bills than last winter

Energy audit your windows

Failed window seals, aged glass, or cracked weatherstripping can account for significant heat loss — especially if you have multiple windows affected.

Seeing multiple signs? Call for a winter window inspection.

Emergency Service

We Still Come in Cold Weather

Many homeowners assume glass repair stops in winter. It does not. Expert Glass Repair provides emergency glass response year-round, including in freezing temperatures and during snow events.

Our technicians are equipped for cold-weather installations: heated vehicles to keep materials at proper temperature, special cold-weather glazing compounds, and the experience to work safely in ice and snow.

The only exception: During active blizzards or severe ice storms where roads are impassable, we will defer to road conditions for safety — but we will dispatch the moment travel becomes possible and you will be our first call.

DIY Tips

Weatherproofing While Waiting for Repair

These temporary measures can reduce heat loss and drafts while you wait for professional glass repair to be scheduled.

Do This

Apply V-strip Weatherstripping

Peel-and-stick V-strip along the sides of double-hung windows creates a tight seal when the window closes. Available inexpensively at hardware stores.

Do This

Use Draft Snakes

Foam or fabric draft snakes along the window sill block cold air infiltration at the bottom edge while you wait for professional repair. Not a long-term solution, but effective short-term.

Do This

Apply Window Film Insulation Kits

Shrink-wrap film kits create an insulating air pocket in front of the glass, improving thermal performance significantly. Works on drafty windows and is removable in spring.

Do This

Add Thermal Curtains

Heavy, insulated curtains reduce heat loss through glass by up to 10%. Not a glass repair solution, but an effective way to stay comfortable while permanent repair is scheduled.

Do This

Rope Caulk for Temporary Sealing

Soft rope caulk pressed into gaps around the window frame provides a removable, seasonal air seal. Easy to apply, easy to remove in spring, and inexpensive.

Avoid This

Do NOT use tape on glass

Adhesive tape damages glass coatings and window paint. It provides minimal insulation value and is very difficult to remove cleanly. Avoid it entirely.

Timing Guide

Best Time to Replace Windows — Honest Advice

We will always tell you if your repair can safely wait. Here is the honest answer on timing.

Situation
Non-emergency repairs (failed seal, foggy glass)
Recommendation
Can wait until spring if the window is still functional
Best Season
April–October
Glass adhesives and sealants cure best above 40°F. Cold-weather installations are possible but less ideal.
Situation
Cracked glass (minor, not weather-exposed)
Recommendation
Monitor but schedule within 30 days
Best Season
Any season
Cracks propagate with temperature swings. What is a small crack in December can become a break by March.
Situation
Broken or missing glass (any season)
Recommendation
Repair immediately — this is an emergency
Best Season
Now
We perform emergency glass replacement in all weather conditions, including mid-winter.
Situation
Drafty windows (weatherstripping issue)
Recommendation
Repair before the next cold snap
Best Season
Fall is best; winter works too
Weatherstripping replacement is quick and can be done in cold weather.
FAQ

Winter Glass Questions Answered

Do you do glass repair in winter, including during snow and ice?
Yes. We provide emergency glass repair year-round, including in winter weather conditions. For complete breakage or weather exposure, we will respond regardless of temperature. For non-emergency repairs, we may reschedule if active ice storms make travel dangerous — but we will not leave you with a broken window.
My window cracked but didn't break completely. Is this an emergency?
It depends on the crack's location and severity. A crack in a ground-floor window or door glass should be repaired promptly — cracks propagate, especially with winter temperature swings, and a cracked window provides significantly less security. Call us at (703) 679-7741 and describe the crack — we will advise whether it needs same-day attention.
Is it normal to see condensation on the inside surface of my windows in winter?
Interior condensation (on the room-facing surface of the glass) is actually normal in winter when indoor humidity is high — it is the same effect as a cold beverage glass sweating in summer. However, condensation between the two panes of a double-pane window indicates seal failure and requires IGU replacement.
My windows feel drafty but the glass looks intact. What's happening?
Drafts most often come from failed weatherstripping around the sash, gaps in the glazing compound (the material holding glass in the frame), or a warped frame that no longer creates a tight seal. We can inspect and identify the source quickly. Many times, a simple weatherstripping replacement solves the problem.
Can cold weather damage my windows even without a storm?
Absolutely. Thermal stress cracking is most common during calm, cold, sunny days when one half of a glass pane is warmed by direct sun while the other stays cold. Older or stressed glass (glass that has previous micro-cracks from age or impact) is especially vulnerable. The crack often appears suddenly on a bright winter morning.
I have ice on the inside corners of my window frame. Is this serious?
Ice forming on the interior window frame indicates significant cold bridging — heat is escaping through the frame faster than the interior warm air can compensate. This is most common in older aluminum frames without thermal breaks. It can damage the frame, the wall around it, and the glass seal. Have it inspected before it causes water damage when it melts.
