Common Questions

Smart Glass Installation FAQ

What is the difference between electrochromic, PDLC, and SPD smart glass?
Electrochromic glass gradually tints from clear to dark using a low voltage, controlling solar heat and glare while maintaining outward visibility. PDLC glass switches instantly between transparent and opaque (frosted white), providing on-demand privacy but not solar control. SPD glass uses suspended particle technology to continuously adjust tint levels from clear to very dark. Electrochromic is best for exterior windows and solar control, PDLC for interior privacy, and SPD for applications needing both tint control and privacy.
Can smart glass be retrofitted to existing windows?
Yes. Smart film, a self-adhesive PDLC product, can be applied to existing glass to add switchable privacy without replacing the window. For electrochromic and SPD technologies, the existing glass must be replaced with the new smart glass unit in the same frame, provided the frame can support the additional weight. We assess your existing windows and recommend the most practical retrofit approach for your building.
How much electricity does smart glass use?
Smart glass uses very little electricity. PDLC glass consumes about 5 to 7 watts per square meter in the clear state and zero watts in the opaque state (it defaults to opaque when unpowered). Electrochromic glass uses a small amount of power only during the tinting transition and virtually zero power to maintain a tinted state. SPD glass uses about 1 to 5 watts per square meter depending on the tint level. Annual electricity costs are negligible for any smart glass technology.
How long does smart glass last?
Electrochromic glass from established manufacturers is rated for over 100,000 tinting cycles and has a lifespan of 20 to 30 years. PDLC glass is rated for over 50,000 switching cycles, translating to 10 to 20 years of typical use. SPD glass is rated similarly to electrochromic at 100,000-plus cycles. The glass itself lasts indefinitely. The active layers and electrical components are the lifespan-limiting factors. All technologies far outlast mechanical blinds and shades.
Can smart glass be integrated with building automation systems?
Yes. All smart glass technologies can integrate with building management systems, smart home platforms, voice assistants, and custom automation. Electrochromic glass commonly integrates with BMS systems to respond to sun position, occupancy, and energy management schedules. PDLC glass integrates with room booking systems for automatic conference room privacy. We configure the control integration as part of every installation.
Does smart glass provide UV protection?
Yes. All smart glass technologies block 95 to 99 percent of UV radiation in both clear and tinted states. Electrochromic glass in the fully tinted state blocks up to 99.9 percent of UV rays along with significant solar heat. This UV protection prevents fading of furniture, flooring, artwork, and merchandise. The UV blocking is a permanent property of the glass, not dependent on the tint state.
What happens if the power goes out?
PDLC glass defaults to the opaque (frosted) state when power is lost, maintaining privacy. Electrochromic glass holds its current tint level when power is lost and slowly returns to the clear state over several hours. SPD glass defaults to the darkest tint when unpowered. None of the technologies require continuous power to maintain a state, so a brief power interruption has minimal impact.
Is smart glass energy efficient for exterior windows?
Electrochromic glass is highly energy efficient for exterior windows. By dynamically controlling solar heat gain, it can reduce cooling costs by 20 to 30 percent compared to static Low-E glass with blinds. The glass adjusts throughout the day to block heat when the sun is direct while allowing passive solar heating when beneficial. Studies in DMV-climate buildings show significant HVAC energy savings and improved occupant comfort with electrochromic exterior glazing.
