Understanding Pivot Doors

What Is a Pivot Shower Door?

A pivot shower door swings open using a pivot mechanism mounted at the top and bottom of the glass panel rather than side-mounted wall hinges. The pivot point is typically offset 4 to 6 inches from the edge of the glass, allowing the door to swing both inward and outward without binding against the shower curb or wall.

Because the pivot hardware is concealed at the top and bottom, the glass edges remain completely free of visible hinges or brackets. This creates the cleanest, most minimal aesthetic of any swinging shower door type. The door appears to float in the opening, with only a small pivot pin visible at the very top and bottom of the panel.

Pivot shower doors are ideal for walk-in showers and alcove showers where a wide, unobstructed entry is desired. They pair beautifully with both frameless and semi-frameless enclosure designs and are available in all standard glass types and hardware finishes. The bi-directional swing capability also makes pivot doors a preferred choice for universal design and accessibility-focused bathrooms.

Why Pivot

The Benefits of Pivot Shower Doors

Minimal hardware, maximum elegance. Here is what makes pivot doors stand out from every other shower door type.

Clean, Minimal Aesthetic

Pivot hinges are concealed at the top and bottom of the glass, leaving the side edges completely free of visible hardware.

Wide, Unobstructed Opening

Pivot doors swing a full 90 degrees or more, creating a wide entryway with no frame or track to step over.

No Bottom Track

Like frameless hinged doors, pivot doors have no bottom track to trap water, soap, or debris.

Bi-Directional Swing

Unlike standard hinged doors that swing in only one direction, pivot doors can swing both inward and outward.

Tempered Safety Glass

Every pivot door uses code-compliant tempered glass that is 4 to 5 times stronger than standard glass and shatters into safe, small pieces if broken.

Long-Lasting Performance

Precision-machined pivot mechanisms distribute the weight of the glass evenly across top and bottom pins, reducing stress on hardware and ensuring smooth.

Glass Options

Choose Your Glass Thickness

Both options use code-compliant tempered safety glass. Your choice depends on opening width, aesthetic preference, and budget.

Pivot Door Hardware Anatomy

Every pivot shower door relies on precision-engineered components. Here is a breakdown of the hardware that makes your door operate flawlessly for decades.

Top Pivot Pin

Precision-machined stainless steel pin mounted in the header that serves as the upper rotation point. Supports the door weight and maintains vertical alignment.

Bottom Pivot Pin

Floor-mounted or curb-mounted pivot pin that bears the majority of the door weight. Includes a thrust bearing for smooth, effortless rotation.

Pivot Plates

Chrome, nickel, or brass mounting plates that secure the pivot pins to the ceiling/header and floor. Pre-drilled for precise hardware alignment.

Pull Handle

Round or D-shaped pull handle mounted through the glass panel. Available in all coordinating finishes to match pivot hardware.

Sweep Seal

Flexible vinyl or silicone strip along the bottom edge of the glass that prevents water from escaping under the door during use.

Side Seals

Clear magnetic or compression strips along the vertical edges of the door that create a water-tight seal against the fixed panel or wall.
